Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: Shadows of doubt

As the adrenaline of the fight slowly ebbed away, Amon found himself standing over the fallen enforcer, his chest still heaving with exertion. He looked down at the lifeless body, feeling a strange mix of triumph and unease churning in his stomach. "I killed someone," he muttered to himself, his voice barely above a whisper. "But no, it wasn't a human, was it?"

The silence was broken by the timid voices of the young girls, who had gathered around Amon, their eyes wide with a mixture of fear and gratitude. "Thank you," one of them whispered, her voice barely audible.

Amon's gaze softened as he looked at them. "You're welcome," he replied, his voice gentle. "Are you all okay?"

The girls nodded, some of them still shaking from the ordeal. "We're fine," another girl said, her voice trembling slightly. "Thank you for saving us."

"Where are you guys gonna go?" Amon asked, genuinely curious.

The girl hesitated for a moment before responding, "Back. We're going to the sanctuary to the west. Hopefully, they'll treat us better there."

Amon's eyebrows shot up in surprise. "There are more sanctuaries?"

The girl nodded. "Yes, there are many dotted across London."

Amon gave them a small nod before turning away, his mind still reeling from the events that had just transpired. As he made his way back, his thoughts were consumed by the memory of the enforcer's final moments. "I have no choice," he muttered to himself, his footsteps echoing in the empty streets.

When he finally arrived, he found Skolo and Star waiting for him outside of it, their expressions grim. "What happened?" Skolo asked, his voice filled with concern.

Amon hesitated for a moment before recounting the events of the day, his words punctuated by long pauses as he struggled to articulate his thoughts. "I had to do it," he said finally, his voice barely above a whisper. "There was no other choice."

Skolo and Star exchanged a glance before nodding in understanding. "We understand," Star said, his voice surprisingly gentle. "You did what you had to do."

Amon nodded, grateful for their understanding. "What about you guys?" he asked, changing the subject. "Did you find anything?"

Skolo nodded, his expression serious. "The enforcer I followed went to a farm to hunt wolves," he said, his voice low. "It didn't end well for the wolves."

Amon winced at the thought before turning to Star. "And what about you?"

Star shrugged, a faint smirk playing on his lips. "My enforcer went to a graveyard to farm skeletons," he said, his voice tinged with amusement. "It was...interesting, but they should be a piece of cake for us to handle"

Amon couldn't help but chuckle at Star's choice of words, grateful for the brief moment of levity. But even as they laughed, he couldn't shake the feeling of unease that lingered in the back of his mind. The events of the day had left him shaken, his thoughts consumed by the weight of his actions.

As the night wore on, Amon found himself lying awake in the sanctuary, his mind still racing with questions. "What have I become?" he whispered to himself, his voice barely audible in the darkness. But despite his doubts and fears, one thing was clear: he couldn't afford to hesitate. Not now, not when there was still so much at stake.
