Just moments ago, they were all sustained by the heightened emotions that came with overwhelming panic; but once they felt hunger, it was the result of not having eaten a single grain of rice or a drop of water in a day and a night. Those with weaker constitutions could barely stand.
They usually worked in the best ranches locally, and even the most basic workers lived comfortably, without worrying about food and clothing. Now, having gone a whole day without food, and despite not doing any physical work, the emotional rollercoaster had sapped a significant amount of their energy.
