Generally, dogs don't eat the mice they catch; they just kill them and leave them as trophies. If the owner rewards them for it, they will quickly become adept at catching mice.
Another creature that's good at catching mice is a snake. Rural families usually don't kill snakes in their homes as they guard the house. Even if a snake occasionally strays into the middle of the courtyard, they will only move it to a corner of the yard.
