Although Quicksand soldiers and Quicksand Priests are both tier five and can fly, their aerial maneuverability is poor, and it consumes more energy. Hence, unless there is a special circumstance, nobody would take to the skies.

As the Sandpeople can burrow into the sands, the underground is their home field in the desert, so they typically don't watch out for dangers below. Given the situation at hand, it was normal for them to overlook it.
Elsewhere, the Sandpeople also saw the Lava Warriors retreating and they too exhaled in relief.
