Washington D.C., located in the Mid-Atlantic region, is the capital of the United States. It is a special administrative district under the direct jurisdiction of the U.S. Congress and thus does not belong to any U.S. state.
Washington D.C. is the political center of the United States. The White House, Congress, the U.S. Supreme Court, and the vast majority of government agencies are all located here. The Capitol Building sits atop what is known as "Capitol Hill" and is a symbol of Washington D.C. This pearly-white building has a domed main structure and connected east and west wings; both houses of Congress office here. The White House is a white marble building and is the location of the offices and residences of all subsequent U.S. presidents after Washington.
