After parting ways with my daughter's mother, I dialed Shikon Qin's number without much thought.
"Mr. Li, what can I do for you?" came the voice on the other end of the line, as soothing as a deep cry in the wilderness.
Yet, her tone was distinctly indifferent.
Li Zhongnan didn't mind. He said, "I am back. I am in Shenzhen now."
"I am not in!" Shikon Qin replied at the instant.
"Oh, then where are you, Sister Qin?"
At her words, Li Zhongnan choked. But somehow, he couldn't muster up any anger towards this widow.
"I will be in Shenzhen tomorrow. I will call you then." said the widow, and promptly hung up.
Despite being told countless times to address her as Miss Shikon or Manager Shikon, he always forgot and addressed her as 'sister'. Out of options, she capitulated.
"Alright, I…"
The call was abruptly terminated before he completed his sentence.
A wry smile tugged at the corners of Li Zhongnan's mouth. He knew he had no one but himself to blame.
