He clenched his teeth discreetly, never considering the possibility of being outflanked even with the person by his side. Thus, he grandly declared his willingness to pick her up and drop her off for work, under the pretense of it being "on the way."
On the way?
Amanda Smith was a bit puzzled.
Samuel Johnson's company was in fact a fair distance from her magazine office. Even if one were to take shortcuts, there was no such thing as "on the way."
Nonetheless, she was happy about the free ride. She didn't want to trouble Evan Willow, and now that Samuel Johnson was willing to commute with her, why wouldn't she be pleased?
Amanda Smith agreed to Samuel Johnson and turned to call Evan Willow to inform him of this arrangement, declining his offer to drive her every day.
On the other end, Evan Willow said nothing for a long while after hearing her words. Just when Amanda Smith felt confused, he finally spoke in a somewhat odd tone, "As long as you're happy."
