The dinner that day was had together by everyone.
Mrs. Johnson appeared somewhat pleased to see Amanda Smith coming downstairs; perhaps she used to despise and resent her, but now she dared not complain about anything. As long as Amanda stayed and could make Samuel happy, Mrs. Johnson would hold her tongue.
Samuel seemed in higher spirits than usual, kept putting food on Amanda's plate, making every effort to please her.
Amanda ate very slowly. She could feel the eyes of everyone at the table fixed on her, which brought an invisible pressure. Her feelings towards these group meals had become even more subtle than before.
Distracted, Amanda only ate a little of the food Samuel had served her before she put down her chopsticks. When she stood up from the table, Samuel was in the middle of de-boning her fish. Seeing that she was done eating, he asked in surprise, "Are you full?"
Amanda nodded slightly and looked at him, saying softly, "I am full."
