The inner room was a small sitting area that seemed rather narrow. After the bodyguard searched it thoroughly, he whispered something in Samuel Johnson's ear, and Samuel's expression cleared up a bit as he said to Doctor Woods, "Then I'll wait outside."
Doctor Woods nodded, gestured for Amanda Smith to enter, and then stood up, hands behind his back, and walked into the inner room.
Amanda Smith glanced at Samuel and followed him in.
Doctor Woods, hands still behind his back and walking leisurely, instructed Amanda to shut the door latch as she entered, then lit a dim lamp.
The furnishings in the inner room were simple, with only a table and a few wooden chairs for receiving guests. The old man sat in his usual chair and waved Amanda over, "Amanda, come sit."
He addressed her as Miss Smith outside but now, it was much more intimate.
