All the servants of the Johnson family were trembling in fear, avoiding entering the living room whenever possible. This made it hard for the maid serving dinner, who was so scared she was on the verge of tears. The malevolent atmosphere in the dining room was incomparably worse than in the living room.
Five years had passed, some servants had left, and others had arrived; Amanda Smith was an unmentionable presence in this household.
