When Samuel Johnson came down from upstairs, what he saw was his mother's ghastly pale face. It startled him slightly, and he hurried over to stabilize her staggering frame. As he looked up, he saw Amanda Smith standing inside the room with her back to them. They were some distance apart, and he couldn't understand what had made Mrs. Johnson like this.
"Mom, what happened?"
Mrs. Johnson moved her lips, then shook her head. Seeing Samuel coming upstairs, she hastily spoke a single sentence and then retreated, leaving quickly. It was truly terrifying for her to see Amanda Smith; she really didn't even dare to look at her.
The sound of Mrs. Johnson's high heels disappeared at the stairwell, and the corridor became quiet once again.
