On the day Samuel Johnson returned, it was a Wednesday afternoon. His leg injury had not fully healed, and it was still encased in plaster. Mrs. Johnson wheeled him into the house. The entire household staff of the Johnson family watched as Samuel sat in the wheelchair, exchanging glances without a word.
Mrs. Johnson helped him onto the couch and asked softly, "Is there anything you'd like to eat? Mom will send someone to make it for you."
Samuel surveyed the hall and then shook his head.
His complexion seemed somewhat sullen as if he was troubled by something. Mrs. Johnson also knew that her son had not been very happy in the hospital these past few days. She guessed that Samuel had suffered a great deal because of Amanda Smith, and he was brooding over it. She had tried her best to advise him, to no avail, and now she couldn't help feeling a bit despondent herself.
