Debbie drove to the address the caller had sent her. This time around, it was a different location. It was already 8 at night but her mother was there, wasting her resources and bringing shame to her and her dead father. She breathed in and out because she knew that somehow, that night wasn't going to be peaceful for both of them.
After getting a bit of fresh air, she headed inside and found a man with a short apron tied to his waist. He was mopping the floor and anyone could see that he was as well preparing to leave. The man looked at Debbie immediately as she entered. In return, she stopped walking to greet and inquire about her mum.
"Hi, good evening."
"Hello, are you Miss Debbie?"
"Yes, I am."
"Alright, please, come with me."
He led her to a private spot where a woman with messy hair was. Her head was placed on the table and she had numerous bottles in front of her. She kept mumbling words that no one could hear and would shake the table sometimes. She was lucky that at least the table wasn't filled with breakable bottles. She drank from the plastic ones instead.
Debbie felt so ashamed that she could feel the pain crawl up her skin, eating her clothes and soul. She was more than embarrassed and tried hard to fight the tears in her eyes.
She looked at the man with a tight-lipped smile.
"Did she pay for these?"
"Unfortunately, no."
She brought out her purse and counted the sum needed to make the payment before reaching out to her mother.
"Branbranblah…hmm, who are you? I got the drinks and the president…hmmm, tasty." Her mum kept saying gibberish non-stop as she lifted her.
"Mum…"
"Who are…[burped] you…who… you?"
"I am Debbie, your daughter."
Her mum scowled and pushed Debbie away from her, "My daughter? That's disgusting. I don't wish to see her." She grumbled and then pulled Debbie closer to her. She smiled drunkenly.
"But you don't look like my daughter. You are more beautiful than her and more outspoken. I am sure that your parents will be very proud of you because of your good deed, unlike my daughter. She is a dis…disgrace."
Debbie smiled at the man, her eyes full of gratitude as she managed to pull her mother to the car and forced her in. She entered as well and turned on the engine, after making sure that nothing was on the way, she drove gently.
On her way, her mum kept talking gibberish and kept on cursing her husband alongside Debbie. The latter was trying hard to control her tears but she couldn't, she just burst into tears as she continued driving.
"Oh my, young lady, why are you crying? Don't cry, everything is fine. You are useful, aren't you?"
"I can't believe that you are doing this, mum. Can't you even think about yourself even if not me? Your health is at a huge risk." She cried out.
Her mum burped and turned around in discomfort. What Debbie was saying was useless to her, she squeezed her face and looked out the window. Debbie parked in front of their house, and her mum struggled to get out.
Debbie rushed to help her and when they got to the sitting room, her mum messed up the whole place. It had been a long since Debbie came into the house, and her eyes got teary as she looked around. This was a place that she once called home. A place where she had no problems and was happy with her family but it dried up like a fountain with no source anymore.
The joy and liveliness in it were nowhere to be found. All she could see was the dried-up bones of a dead home.
"Mum, what have you done to yourself?"
Her mum looked at her in a daze and burst into mocking laughter.
"Oh, it's really Debbie and I thought my eyes were deceiving me. What…what are you doing here?"
"Mum, can't you at least think of your health? You are acting foolishly and it's terrible. Do you hate dad and me so much that you are willing to kill yourself? You are embarrassing me, mum!" She yelled.
"Oh [chuckled], I am the one embarrassing you, huh? You and your late father can go to hell, I don't care. I don't like you and I don't want to see your face! He was the worst thing that has ever happened to me and you [walked drunkenly to where Debbie was and pointed at her chest repeatedly]...you are a MISTAKE."
She said and hot streaming tears flowed down Debbie's eyes as she looked at her beloved mother. That eyes that once held happiness and joy all for her being a daughter to her were now holding something far worse than the sadness; it was contempt.
"So you consider me a MISTAKE? Really? I never begged you to bring me to this world! Why are you behaving like this? You are refusing to speak up nor are you helping with your situation. I know you don't like me and Dad even though I don't know why but can you please…at this rate care about what people say about you? You are my mum, people in the neighborhood and on the street know this. We were seen together when I was a kid but look at how distant we are.
Drinking will only…"
"Enough! That's enough from your stinking mouth, I have had enough of your silliness and lecture. You can give that to your father on the other side of life. You know what, I don't regret any of my actions at all because I stand on what I call the truth and there is nothing you can tell him, I am not changing my mind.
I regret meeting your father and having you. Both of you ruined my life and were the worst thing that happened to me. I don't want to see your face. Leave! Leave my house now! You are only good at paying for my drinks and coming to my rescue like a wonder woman when I don't really need it. Leave!" With all her strength, Debbie got pushed out by her mum and the door was slammed in her face.
Debbie's body shook in pain, she was crying very hard as her brain turned numb. She quietly knocked on the door with thousands of pleas but her mum was stubborn about opening the door so she left after standing there for thirty minutes.
Things were not like that for her before. She had that perfect family that many people could be jealous of and she had seen her parents interact lovingly with each other so why did her mum develop this sudden hate for him then?
Or could a person be mad at his/her other partner for leaving the world behind due to the course of nature this long? Even to the point of hating him and drinking so hard. Ever Since her father's death, she didn't have a smooth relationship with her mum anymore. Things turned upside down when she started avoiding her and would insult Debbie, giving her less confidence than she needed.
As she rode home, she became stressed and tried not to think about it. One could forgive the past but won't be able to forget it.
