Chapter 4 - All Falls Apart, All Comes Together.

As we stepped through the entrance of the grand palace of Lazarus, I couldn't help but feel awed by its opulent halls looming before us.

The palace was magnificent, towering high above us with intricate carvings and delicate art adorning its walls. The grand entrance was a marvel of engineering and design, with ornate black iron and brass structures illustrated with otherworldly beings that seemed alive in the flickering light.

Whispering excitedly to my new companion Nexus, I began to regale him with stories of my past adventures with Kaida and Taro, hoping to distract myself from the overwhelming anxiety of stepping toward the palace.

"Welcome to the palace of Lazarus, assuming you haven't been here before Nexus," I said, knowing he couldn't respond with words.

Still, his bright, digital eyes showed his interest. "That's right," I smiled at my new mechanical companion. "This is the first time I've set foot in a place as grand as this too." Nexus's antenna tail wagged enthusiastically, displaying his curiosity and eagerness to hear more about my past adventures.

"In the Enchanted Forest," I continued, "we met an old, wise owl named Oakenwing, who guided us through the labyrinthine trails of the forest. Oakenwing was a magnificent and ancient creature, revered throughout the Enchanted Forest for his wisdom and age. He had feathers as deep and rich as mahogany and eyes that exuded a sense of timeless knowledge."

Nexus's cyan digital eyes flickered with interest.

"We also ventured into the Cave of Echoes," I said, "where our voices reverberated like a chorus of a hundred souls. The cave was an immense, natural chamber with walls glistening in shades of silver and aquamarine, adorned with delicate crystal formations that sparkled like stars." Nexus's thick antenna tail swayed more vigorously, signifying his excitement. As we stood after a few steps, my heart raced with anticipation.

The stories of my past adventures provided a welcome distraction. Still, the palace of Lazarus was a new chapter, and I knew that more adventures and mysteries awaited us beyond those opulent doors. Nexus and I were ready for whatever lay ahead.

Entering the palace itself was like stepping into a realm of intricate dreams. The architecture was a living testament to artistry and engineering, with every corner revealing another captivating detail you couldn't mistake as the world of CrestFall itself, represented in the color scheme, a mosaic reflecting the image of Oakenwing sat hung next to the many other legendary beings that call CrestFall home.

"huh, he looks familiar," I chuckled to myself.

I couldn't help but marvel at the mosaic floors, complex carvings that told stories of ancient legends, and the towering structures that seemed to defy gravity. Nexus trotted beside me, his mechanical tail wagging, his teal eyes gleaming.

As we wandered deeper into the palace, I couldn't ignore the mystery in the air.

Whispers of secrets and intrigue brushed against my ears, leaving me with anticipation.

The palace corridors were a labyrinth of amazement. I noticed portraits of past Emperors, their stern expressions frozen in time. Each one seemed to carry the weight of their rule, and their eyes followed me as I passed.

"Welcome to the Echo Emperor's realm," a soft voice greeted me. I turned to see a cloaked figure emerging from the shadows. Their eyes were concealed, but there was a glimmer of curiosity in their tone.

"Thank you," I replied, "I've come to locate my friends."

The cloaked figure raised an eyebrow as if sensing the determination in my voice. "Your buddies, you say? They might be closer than you think or, quite possibly, deeper into the shades."

My heart quickened.

"Do you know something about them? Kaida and Taro?"

The figure hesitated for a moment, their gaze piercing through the darkness. "I may have heard whispers, young Exocrest. Whispers of a woman with fiery hair and a man with striking jade eyes."

My breath caught, and I felt a renewed sense of hope. "Where can I find them? Please, I need to know."

The cloaked figure's lips curled into a subtle smile. "You seek the lower levels of the palace, where the Echo Emperor keeps his most treasured secrets. But be warned, the clouds down there hold their dangers. It is not a place for the faint of heart."

I nodded, gratitude filling my heart. "Thank you for your advice. But, I will find them, no matter the price." Nexus barked in agreement, his loyalty unwavering.

As I ventured deeper into the palace, the surroundings grew more mysterious. Intricate mechanisms and relics adorned the walls, whispering tales of forgotten ages. It was as if I was walking through a museum of time, each exhibit more peculiar than the last.

Suddenly, I stopped, turned to Nexus, and asked, "Did that guy seem odd to you? And come to think of it, where is everyone? I got so caught up in the idea of a lead that I forgot to listen to my gut. Eyes up, buddy, something may be wrong."

As we descended into the lower levels, the air grew colder and the darkness more oppressive. Mysterious figures moved silently in the shadows, their presence like echoes from another world.

I couldn't shake the feeling of being watched, but I pressed on, my determination unwavering.

I gasped at the sight before me as we entered a vast chamber. A massive, ornate door stood at the room's far end, surrounded by elaborate engravings that seemed alive in the dim light.

Nexus sniffed the air, his mechanical nose detecting something I couldn't perceive. He growled softly, a low, ominous sound that sent shivers down my spine.

"We're not alone," I whispered, unsheathing Ketu.

As if on cue, a group of five darkened figures emerged from the shade, their movements as fluid as smoke. They were members of the Clockwork Collective, sleek and lethal.

One of them stepped forward, their face concealed by a mask adorned with numbers. "What do you seek here, Lotus Exocrest?" he hissed, his voice dripping with menace and a hint of sarcastic laughter.

"I seek my friends," I replied, my voice steady. "Kaida and Taro. Where are they?"

The masked figure chuckled, the sound sending a chill down my spine. "Your friends are not here, and they won't be alive long; the Syndicate hates cowards."

I tightened my grip on the sword, my determination unwavering. "Syndicate? Never mind that! I won't be intimidated by the likes of you. Tell me where they are, or prepare to face the consequences!"

The Clockwork Collective members moved closer, their weapons glinting in the low light. It was clear they were ready for a fight, but so was I, "Consequences it is then,"

Nexus bared his mechanical teeth, a low growl rumbling from his throat.

Nexus sprang into action, his robotic body moving with agility and grace. His claws glinted in the flickering opaque light as he lunged forward, his movements precise and calculated. I watched in awe as my loyal companion fought with a ferocity that belied his mechanical nature. He dodged and weaved around the attacks of the Collective members, his sensors detecting their movements before they even made them. With a low growl, he leaped forward, his claws tearing through the air, and landed a solid blow on one of his opponents.

I held still, watching the others. "Jeez, Nexus, I didn't realize you were a fighter too!"

As the confrontation with the Clockwork Collective escalated, I tightened my grip on Ketu, with my breaths beginning to get heavy; fighting this many was a challenge.

I charged forward, my sword held high, cutting through the air precisely. My movements were fluid, each swing calculated to land a blow on my enemies. The sound of metal clashing against metal echoed through the chamber. "I've come so far; you don't stand a chance!" I dodged and weaved, my eyes focused on my targets, my strikes quick and decisive. With each movement, I drew closer to my goal, my grit unwavering.

The Collective members coordinated their attacks in unison, but I was faster and more skilled. I spun around, my sword slicing through the air, and landed a solid blow on one of my opponents. With a fierce battle cry, I lunged forward, my sword glinting, and struck down my enemies individually. The battle was intense, so far, and my sword dripped with the blood of my foes.

I finally got enough time to examine the weapons they were using: daggers; the Clockwork Collective's dagger were a sharp and elegant weapon with clockwork gears on the hilt and a comfortable grip wrapped in black leather. The pommel is designed like a clock face.

The Clockwork Collective members moved with a grace that belied their deadly intent. Two remained. Their weapons glinted in the glow of the cavern, and their eyes gleamed with fierce determination. I could hear their whispers, their voices a low, ominous hum that sent chills down my spine. "You are no match for us," one of them spoke out, their voice laced with arrogance.

I gritted my teeth, ready to prove them wrong. "tell that to your friends," I replied, my voice steady.

The battle was cutthroat, with each side trading blows back and forth. I dodged their attacks with a grace honed from the last few years of training. Nexus lunged at them with an almost feral ferocity, his metal claws tearing through the air.

I could hear their taunts and jeers during the fight, but I didn't let it distract me. I fought with all my might, determined to save my friends and uncover the truth.

As the battle raged on, I began to feel the weight of exhaustion. These two, in particular, were very strong, and my arms were getting heavy, and my breaths came in ragged gasps. But I refused to give up. I fought even more still, my determination unwavering.

Suddenly, I heard a familiar voice. "Lotus, look out!" the body from which the voice projected landed a blow on one of the Clockwork Collective members, his sword flashing. My heart lifted, and I felt renewed hope as my eyes raised.

 It was Aiden.

Together, we fought with renewed vigor. Our attacks were coordinated, and our movements fluid.

And the last Clockwork Collective member was no match for us.

In the end, we emerged victorious. The members of the Clockwork Collective lay defeated on the ground, their weapons scattered around them. I felt a sense of relief wash over me. We had uncovered a new lead.

As we caught our breath, Aiden turned to me with a smile. "You did well, Lotus. I'm proud of you." I smiled back, grateful for his support even though we both knew I had taken the front line of the action. "Thanks, Aiden. I couldn't have done it without you, kind of." I looked over at Nexus, who was paying us no mind; after the fight, he laid directly down and waited for the next move, clearly not tired.

We made our way out of the depths, our spirits high. I felt a renewed sense of purpose as we emerged into the light.

I turned to my new companions and said,

"At least we knew where to start...The Collective."
