When Nik's name is uttered, Cali feels a flutter of excitement in her chest. She swiftly turns her head toward the door, but all she can see of him is the back of his head. Oh no. He must have completely misread the situation.
She stands up hastily because she needs to catch up to Nik and explain. However, Anderson manages to grab her arm. "Cali," Anderson murmurs to her with a look of uncertainty on his face, "Don't go."
She rips herself away from Anderson's grasp and hurries towards the exit before he has a chance to say anything. "I have to go," she says.
Nik is making his way down the corridor with great steps in the direction of the door that leads to the stairs. He walks at an unnaturally quick pace, and her heels are not in the least bit helpful.
"Nik," Cali yells out in a hushed tone. She manages to catch up with him just in time to see him walk down the steps.
"Please allow me to explain."
