Helen Melendy found herself at a loss for words after the barrage of questions.
"There isn't even a hint of 'double happiness' characters written yet—why talk about marriage? I've told you before, let's just go with the flow and take one step at a time."
Helen did not really want to discuss her relationship with Harry Hall with Elly Campbell, fearing it would upset her by reminding her of Adam Jones, so she subtly changed the subject, saying:
"There's a new dessert shop that opened in Baton Rouge today, with really great flavors—sweet but not cloying. I know you like desserts, so I came specially to invite you over."
Elly was in no mood for sweets, but she knew Helen had come all the way to find her, out of concern, and to cheer her up.
She did not want to decline Helen's kind gesture and nodded in agreement.
"Okay."
However, as soon as they arrived at the dessert shop and had not yet adjusted their mood, Elly ran into someone who made her feel even worse.
