Chapter 1 - THE BETA WATCH

Jake laid on the couch as he wallowed in pain and sorrow.

Moments ago, he had just been informed by representatives of the company his dad worked for about the sudden passing of his parents.

"...they died due to the product of a failed experiment...". They had told him

It had all come as a shock to him as he knew his parents to be careful scientists who avoided errors or mistakes when carrying out experiments.

His robotic eyes which they got for him for his last birthday was enough proof of that.

He felt sorrowful and unhappy because he had only gotten to see his parents for a month since he had been blind from birth and he his birthday was just last month.

The fact that he couldn't express his pain by shedding tears further intensified the sorrow he was already feeling.

Like most cyborgs, his inability to shed tears was the sacrifice he had made to gain a lost sense organ.

He felt helpless that he couldn't do anything about his parents' death even though he knew the cause of it.

He knew very well that the company was responsible for their deaths and had false fully dubbed the cause of their deaths with the notion of "a failed experiment".

This wasn't the first time a death had occurred due to a so-called "failed experiment " there. The Company was normally responsible for these deaths. The main reason for this measure was to retain the secrets of the company. This, any prior knowledge must be exterminated and any individual in possession of relevant information about the said secret would be assassinated or killed in the company's premises. Maybe his mum and dad probably knew too much.

He had personally carried out his personal research on the company and had continuously warned his parents to desist from it, but they refused stating that all he said was just a product of hi overactive imagination and that they would never find any other company who could compare to theirs. They had this feeling of pride when staying their status as employees of the company.

In reality, the company wasn't that bad either. In fact, it was one of the country's top prosperous and influential companies.

They specialized in the creation and manufacturing of advanced robotic parts for maimed individuals.

In this age where a majority of the world's population were cyborgs, Robotic parts were in high demand and any company who ventured into such business would be said to rake in money.

One couldn't possibly imagine the amount a common employee would earn by working in such company would be over 100000 credits!

Not to talk of major employees like jake's parents.

No worker in their position would ever give up their jobs.

Ding!

Jake regained his composure as he heard a sound come from the painting on the wall.

Immediately, He got up from the couch and stared at the painting which stood still on the wall.

The painting brought back many old memories.

I showed a picture of he and his mum with a blind-fold a cross both his eyes.

He could remember this picture. His mum had gotten him a new floating board but he couldn't use it due to his lack of sight at that time so his mum had promised him a set of new eyes and the following year she did get him a new set of eyes.

Just as Jake was about to return back to the couch, he heard the ding sound again.

Now he knew he couldn't neglect this.

He gently removed the painting from the wall and placed it on the floor.

He found nothing strange, only a blank white wall.

Again the sound echoed in his ears coming directly from the wall in front of him.

He guessed that there must've been a secret safe or something behind the wall.

He then placed his palm on the wall to feel for any types of mechanism that could trigger the door to the safe as he knew his parents were prolific engineers.

Just as he placed his palm on the wall, the portion around his palm began to illuminate.

Soon, the wall released a hissing sound as the entirety of the wall splitted and parted open like an elevator door.

What had been proposed to be a safe had actually turned out to be a room.

Jake could not contain his amazement as he wandered into the room.

The room itself was as large as two basketball courts and various types of gadgets were placed at opposite sides of the room.

At the far end of the room was an enclosed piece of gadget raised on a short pillar which was illuminated by a spot light shining on top of it further intensifying it's uniqueness.

Jake ignored all other gadgets and walked straight to the enclosed gadget.

As he got there, he removed the metal casing enclosing it only to find a... Watch.

Jake had expected it to be some kind of high tech technology or a bomb which could pulvurise an entire nation but instead, he was surprised with a watch.

Unlike other watches, this watch was larger and the details were more intricate.

Its face displayed a stop watch indicating a countdown, probably to a specific event.

He gazed at the watch for a long time and still found nothing special in this watch.

He had a lot of questions running through his mind at that moment.

He then decided to put on the watch as he guessed that it might be programmed to be effective only when worn.

As he wore the watch, a square shaped menu materialized in front of him.

[Do you wish to bond with the Beta watch?]

Joy beamed in his heart as he saw this notification.

There was only one thing that this could mean.... A system upgrade.

It meant that his eyes would undergo a qualitative upgrade from its current version.

He couldn't believe that his parents had left him such a present.

On the menu two boxes were put just below the message written.

He hurriedly picked the box which had the word 'yes' written on it.

Suddenly, his entire vision went dark. It was like someone had switched of a light bulb and the room had suddenly become dark.

He felt a tiny needle-like object pierce the skin which was in direct contact with the watch.

He let out a loud cry as he could feel a liquid substance course through his veins moving at an unmeasurable speed, replacing his blood which drained away from him from a cut on his wrist which he had not noticed.

By the time this whole scenario had ended, Jake had already passed out.
