Chapter 4 - The Dilemma of Choosing

Civilization: Spartan Hegemony

Description: Enigmatic and formidable, the Spartan Hegemony embodies the essence of military discipline and martial prowess. Governed by the unique system of the Spartan Constitution, this civilization prioritizes the art of war and the strength of its renowned warriors.

Strengths:

Elite Infantry: Spartans are renowned for their unparalleled discipline and combat skills. Elite hoplites, trained from a young age, form the backbone of the Spartan army, excelling in defensive formations and powerful offensive strikes.

Military Discipline: A rigid military-focused society ensures unmatched discipline and order. Spartan armies benefit from increased morale, reduced maintenance costs, and swift response times.

Agrarian Resilience: Spartan lands are efficiently organized, with well-maintained agoge-focused farms. Agricultural technologies and policies ensure a robust food supply, even in harsh conditions.

Laconic Economy: The Spartan economy is streamlined and focused on military needs. Unique policies allow for faster recruitment, cheaper maintenance of military units, and efficient resource allocation.

Weaknesses:

Limited Cultural Development: The single-minded focus on military strength may lead to slower advancements in cultural, scientific, and artistic endeavors.

Diplomatic Challenges: Spartan diplomacy is often perceived as aggressive and domineering. Forming alliances and maintaining positive relations may prove challenging.

Helot Strain: The reliance on slave labor (helots) poses challenges in resource acquisition. Unrest among helots may lead to internal strife if not managed carefully.

Naval Inferiority: Spartan naval capabilities are not as advanced as their land forces. Competing in maritime conflicts requires strategic alliances or careful development of naval technologies.

Spartan Hegemony,Spartan Hegemony, well the sound of Elite infantry and Agrarian Resilience its good, but the weaknesses:Inferior Navy,Diplomatic Challenges,Limited Cultural Development, and the need of slaves.I do not see a location where my Civilization begins. No map,no information,nothing...Nothing.Gods are certainly amused by my situation, but i would not give them that desperation they seek from me...in your dreams!.So i must take a different approach, let's say i am gonna start in location surrounded by forest, mountains, rivers.I could immediately throw Naval Inferiority out of the window, the vast plains could be used for growing crops, and nearby ore veins (if there be any) could be used for making weapons.

Wood and stone would not be issue either, and vast pastures of grass would make for good Cattle breeding.Nearby river would serve as the last resort,if the Strength,Agrarian Resilience would be beaten by winter.Army would be build up slowly but surely.

Heh,300 Spartans at my command would certainly outweigh the weakness,Diplomatic Challenges, after all 300 Spartans could beat 2000 Persians at the battle of Thermopylae. So yeah might makes right after all,it would certainly scared the shit out of them, hehehe.

Only thing that bothers me is that weakness called:Limited Cultural Development,Gods sent me here against some Ancient evil..or something.Time would be essential,i Don't know where or when this evil will strike. And that Helot thing would not be problem,it almost feel like this Civilization its supposed to be aggressive towards other Civilizations.Well that is no surprise, after all,its Spartans we talking about, they are militaristic Civilization,if not the only one.

Helot strait would not be,a big issue if i am at war constantly with someone,i hope it will not be so important from the begging, well only time will tell, okay i see last but not least Civilization, show me what you got.

Civilization: Delphic League

Description: Situated near the sacred Oracle of Delphi, the Delphic League draws inspiration from divine prophecies and spiritual wisdom. Its cities, adorned with grand temples and amphitheaters, focus on the pursuit of knowledge, spirituality, and cultural enlightenment.

Strengths:

Divine Guidance: The Delphic League enjoys the favor of the Oracle of Delphi. Periodic prophecies provide insights into future events, aiding in strategic decisions and diplomatic endeavors.

Cultural Renaissance: The civilization thrives on artistic expression, philosophy, and the pursuit of knowledge. Cultural output and influence radiate from amphitheaters, libraries, and academies.

Diplomatic Charm: Known for their wisdom, Delphic envoys excel in diplomacy. Alliances and diplomatic agreements are easier to secure, fostering a sense of unity and shared goals.

Spiritual Resilience: Temples and shrines dedicated to the gods enhance the morale and resilience of the Delphic League's citizens. The civilization is less susceptible to the effects of calamities and unrest.

Weaknesses:

Military Reluctance: The emphasis on spiritual pursuits may lead to a reluctance to engage in military endeavors. The Delphic League must strike a delicate balance between cultural enlightenment and military preparedness.

Oracle Dependency: Reliance on divine guidance may lead to a dependency on oracles for decision-making, potentially causing delays in strategic responses.

City-State Rivalries: The individual city-states within the Delphic League may harbor rivalries and competition, requiring careful political management to maintain unity.

Limited Martial Focus: While the Delphic League is capable of defending itself, its military strength may not match that of civilizations with a primary focus on martial pursuits.

"huh, this is like Hellenic Dominion, but somewhat worse?",said Alexios surprisingly.Cultural Renaissance,Diplomatic Charm,Spiritual Resilience are very temping, but by Poseidon those weaknesses, are awful,Military Reluctance its not that bad, delicate balance between culture, economy, and military must be always at balance,(if you are not Spartan) i could work with this.

Oracle Dependency is like Hellenic Dominion, not good to be dependent on something, especially on resources but Oracles?,really?.In ancient Greece, oracles were individuals or sacred places that were believed to provide insights and prophecies from the gods. These prophecies were sought by individuals, city-states, or even rulers to gain guidance on important decisions, such as whether to go to war, make an alliance, or undertake a major expedition.

yeah waiting on Oracle is like waiting for EA to make a good game,so incredibly slow.Limited Martial Focus also a big weakness, yeah this is not good, regular army, okay cool, but against like Civilization similar like Sparta,Zeus forbid Minotaur's,or Cyclops i would have zero chance.Spartans at least have elite infantry could stand against these creatures with slightly big success rate. Those weakness is similar to Hellenic Dominion, but in terms of Strenght? there are these that stood out,Divine Guidance,Diplomatic Charm,Spiritual Resilience.

Divine Guidance is very handy, especially at time's of war,i doubt that i could spam it like crazy, these Gods have no sense of humor...hehe.Catastrophe is a good example too,it would save so much hassle,to know where and when Catastrophe would unleash.Residents of Pompeii would be saved from volcanic eruption caused by volcano Vesuvu.

Diplomatic Charm, finally some strength about diplomacy, always handy when you are a part in some sort of alliance, but who could accept this Civilization with fragile army, and dependency on Oracles?.Fool, only a fool would accept, but easier and favorable deals of some sorts, that sounds very, very attractive, and that Spiritual Resilience, very good for a Civilization like Spartans, but Delphic League?.Delphic League will certainly be played like turtle, slow expansion, wars would be more costly for me,and so on so forth.

Alexios thought for a while, every seconds would feel like minutes,if not hours. Approximately it took fifteen minutes for this young man to decide."Please have a patience with me i am almost done thinking".Said Alexious anxiously,Alexios thought he would be punished for thinking this long.

"Okay i am decided,i choose you".After that claim to Gods who he thinks was watching, clicked on dimly lighted letters of the Civilization he picked.
