The next day, Zhixin and Mrs. Xue brought with them quite a few gifts to the teacher's home. Wenhan had already mentioned their purpose, so Master Zheng had taken leave and was waiting at home. The meeting between the parties was quite congenial.
Master Zheng's wife, Mrs. Feng, was a very virtuous woman; the couple seemed to have a rather good relationship.
Of course, Master Zheng understood the purpose of Zhixin and his wife's visit, so he had his wife chat with Mrs. Xue and took the opportunity to have his daughter meet Zhixin and his wife.
Mrs. Xue saw that the girl was indeed like her son had described: not overly stunning but unusually graceful and elegant, with an air of scholarly poise. Her son was going to take the imperial examination and might choose a career as an official; it would indeed be good to have a wife who was literate and educated.
