Jinghan held the crossbow in her hand, her eyes fixed intently on the black bear, and then she said to Wenhan and the others, "Nobody make any rash moves. Right now, this guy doesn't seem to have any intention of attacking us, so let's try not to provoke it."
In her mind, Jinghan remembered a discussion among a few friends from her previous life about black bear attacks on humans. An older person had said that black bears are actually afraid of humans and won't usually attack people without provocation. But there are exceptions, especially if a mother bear feels her cubs are in danger, or during the late summer when black bears are in heat – those times might lead to incidents of bears injuring people.
