Matilda could clearly see the look in Victoria's eyes.
However, from her slightly evasive gaze, he read something else.
"Are you preparing dinner for tonight?" he changed the subject, peering into the kitchen.
"Yes…" Victoria pulled Daisy along as she answered, "That is, but we've changed our minds now. Cooking dinner is just too complicated, so we'll let the chef take care of it instead."
Matilda nodded, then as if it was the most natural thing in the world, he asked, "Is Chloe upstairs?"
The moment he asked, Victoria's heart skipped a beat.
"She should be." She didn't want him to see her panic.
Chloe had disappeared somewhere with Shawn Clegg.
Victoria hoped they had gone upstairs, hoped that he had taken Chloe back to her room and then left.
But it was just a hope…
Victoria wasn't sure, so all she could do was respond vaguely, "Um, she wanted to take a nap, I'll go and see how she is. Let's go, Daisy."
As she spoke, she tried to lead Daisy away.
