"Don't worry, where I'm taking you, there are only women, very safe." Franklin Clegg's tone was thick with disdain.
Victoria lowers her head: "Oh."
She responds unhappily.
She doesn't even want to go to a so-called safe place.
Right now, her mind is filled with concern about her baby not having a snack after school and the compressed biscuits that Hank Clegg needs, which she still hasn't managed to make.
"Could you let me go home first, to wait for the baby to get off school?" Victoria attempts to negotiate again.
"No." Franklin responds coldly.
"Why?" Victoria asks relentlessly, unafraid.
"If you want to keep your tongue, shut up!" Franklin's voice drops threateningly.
Victoria is so frightened by this horrific threat that she quickly sticks out her tongue and touches it with her finger to check that it's still there.
This childish action only earns her a contemptuous glance from Franklin.
