"Mom, I really can't fathom what Uncle was thinking," Caroline said to her mother, her eyes swollen from crying.
Caroline's mother had begged Caroline's father for a long time before he finally agreed not to confine the mother and daughter to their room.
But once back in their room, both were filled with resentment.
"I also don't understand what those two brothers are thinking," Caroline's mother replied angrily, "I can still make sense of your father as he has always looked up to your uncle. But why your uncle would protect Victoria Talkington, that's beyond me."
"Could it be," Caroline said venomously, "that our uncle has some particular thoughts about Victoria Talkington?"
"Are you suggesting..." Caroline's mother's eyes rolled in thought, "no way... your uncle... she's someone else's wife, what could he possibly think?"
"Mom, didn't you notice the necklace that Victoria was wearing around her neck?" Caroline asked.
