Victoria tensed, squeezing her hands nervously.
Her phone rang abruptly.
Picking it up, she was startled to find it was a call from Matilda Murphy.
As she answered the phone with trembling hands, Matilda's voice came over, icy cold, even colder than usual. "Was it you in my house just now?" she asked.
"I'm sorry, Miss Murphy..." Victoria's voice was slight as she felt mortified. "I didn't mean to..."
"What did you see or hear?" Matilda coldly interrupted, no matter what Victoria said.
"I didn't see or hear anything. I left the document on the coffee table and left." Victoria was as scared as if she had come across a murder scene.
On the other end of the phone, Matilda was silent for a long while.
Then she repeated, "Tell me what you saw."
"Miss Murphy, please, pretend I saw nothing. I...I'm not the type to gossip behind people's backs." Victoria was practically in tears. "Just let me be... I made a mistake... I won't set foot in your home again, I won't deliver documents."
