Michael thought, if Mrs. Shaw knew who she was or met mom, would she still act so arrogantly, as if she were above everyone else?
Dinner ended in an atmosphere that was oppressive and indescribably tense.
Everyone moved to the Living Room to rest. As other guests began to say their farewells, Evelyn Cloudley called Michael aside.
"Mr. Fortunate, could you stay a little longer?" she implored Michael.
Michael's thoughts were all on John Coleman now...

She smiled at Evelyn Cloudley, "I can't, my brother is waiting at home by himself; I need to go back."
"Can't your brother take care of himself?" Evelyn Cloudley muttered dissatisfiedly.
