The little black dog didn't seem too interested in Ruffy Smith, but Ruffy didn't mind, and forced Blackie to learn the phrase "congratulations and prosperity." Blackie's barking always sounded slightly resentful, perhaps annoyed by Ruffy's pestering.
It wasn't until Ellen Young's faint voice came from inside the house, "Ruffy, help me wash the vegetables."
