Chapter 2 - Why do we work?_1

It seemed like she didn't feel surprised at all about Lucy Wood's identity.

She also didn't care whether Lucy was her sister or not.

Seeing her so composed, Lucy almost doubted she had found the right person.

She said with uncertainty, "I'm your sister, your eldest sister, Lucy Wood."

In fact, when she saw Ellen Young, she had already started to believe it.

Even without a DNA test, Ellen's face resembled their mother's too much.

In the entire family, she had always thought that the third sister looked most like their mother, but unexpectedly, Ellen resembled her even more.

It was just that their auras were too different; the two seemed to have completely opposite personalities.

Ellen didn't speak, and the village head came out with a chuckle to smooth things over, "Ellen has always been like this since she was little; she's not much of a talker."

However, Lucy felt that Ellen wasn't just quiet. It seemed like she simply didn't care to engage with her.

While they were speaking, she saw Ellen take a small box out of her jeans pocket, open it, and pop a small white round candy into her mouth. Her voice was crisp and ethereal, but her tone was too indifferent, "Do you have something you need? I'm quite busy with a lot of things."

Lucy's expression stiffened for a moment.

She smiled at the others and said, "Could you please step outside for a bit? I'd like to have a word alone with Ellen."

The village head and the director both nodded, leaving the office to the two of them.

Once Lucy saw Ellen, she spoke with some excitement, "Ellen, I want you to come back with me. It's been so many years; it's time for you to acknowledge your ancestry and return to the Wood Family. I've spoken to the village head; the grandfather who found you passed away a year ago. Now that you're back, you don't have any family here; why don't you come with me?"

Ellen replied, "Everyone in this village is my family."

Lucy: "..."

She furrowed her brows slightly and asked Ellen, "You're twenty-four this year, right? Did you go to university? Have you graduated?"

She didn't see any information about school in Ellen's records.

Therefore, the Wood Family assumed that she had lived in the countryside since she was young and had never been to school, finding it embarrassing, so they sent her least favorite elder sister to check the situation.

But Lucy had her own compelling reasons and, no matter what, intended to persuade Ellen to return to the Wood Family.

Finally, there was a change in Ellen's expression, and she pushed her tongue against her cheek in a seemingly amused manner, "I graduated."

Lucy breathed a sigh of relief—having an education was good. No wonder this younger sister seemed to have a decent demeanor. She asked further, "Which university did you attend? What was your major?"

She needed to find out so that the Wood Family could judge whether this daughter was worthy or not.

Ellen said, "You talk too much."

Lucy: "..."

She had somewhat miscalculated. This younger sister seemed to be even more unsociable than she had imagined.

No reaction when she heard she was her older sister, and now she even found her talkative.

She thought about how Ellen had been brought up by her grandfather and how he had passed away a year ago, leaving her all alone. It made sense that she would be a bit colder than the average person.

Lucy couldn't help but feel sympathy for Ellen.

She said with compassion, "Ellen, don't be upset with your sister for talking too much, but you should know that you are already twenty-four. If you come back to the Wood Family with me, you could receive better development and have access to a better network to find a good job. If you keep staying in the countryside, what future could there be for you?"

Ellen: "..."

After all the trouble of getting a year's leave from the country, why would she want a job?
