Chapter 9 - Ava - Could it be a coincidence?

Early the next morning, I crawled out of bed.

I woke up earlier than usual to arrange my stuff in my new room. I slept yesterday without tidying or even removing the dust.

I know I'm being hypocritical; actually, I woke up earlier than anyone else, so The Fernandez would think I am a competent wife, but I wasn't lying about tidying up my stuff. I hate scattered and dirty places; they make my skin itch.

I finished around 8:30 and collapsed on my bed, ready to sleep again, but then came a soft tap on my door. I slightly opened the door to see Evelyn smiling with her white 32.

"Good morning, ma'am. Breakfast is set; everyone's waiting downstairs." She looked more like a Barbie doll, just that she was wearing a black gown and a white apron, just like servants dressed in the 1900's.

The entire Fernandez family was already sitting at the dining table when I arrived. I proceeded to greet them and offer to pour tea into their cups. Trust me, I did my research before I slept yesterday_ on how to be lover by your in-laws.

Hilarious right?

Did you sleep well, Ava?". An older woman asked. I didn't see her at yesterday's introduction, but her eyes brightened in excitement when she saw me.

"Yes ma'am"

"That's our Grandma Ava," Charlotte whispered, taking the cup of tea I was offering her.

It was a large dining room, and even the table was long and large enough. It was just exactly like the Duke and his wife in the Bridgerton movie kind of dining. I sat beside Grandma and opposite Young Brad Pitt—I mean, Ethan.

C"I have something for you," grandma said as she opened the blue box, which I didn't notice was on the table all the while she pushed the box to me with a smile. I guess she loves me that much. "The necklace was passed to every new wife. It would really look nice on you".

I took the necklace, which looked like it was made from pure gold. The pendant was really beautiful, but I didn't understand what it meant. It somewhat looked like I was looking at a full moon and then, at some point, a half moon.

"I love it. " I tried to put it on my neck immediately, but the hook wasn't helping me out. Soon I felt a hand on mine when I swiveled my head forcefully; it was Ethan. He smiled and fixed the necklace on my neck. I wonder who he took after—their father or mom?

"I know it must be really hard for you now, but with time things will balance out well. I mean about Gabriel. He was so busy with life that he never felt the need to look for his missing rib it date anyone. Every now and then, he travels around for business, but now I guess nature has forced him to rest a little." Her face wrinkled in pain.

I took her hands into mine and said it with all sincerity. "He will be fine, grandma. I have a strong feeling about that".

"I believe that too. He is running out of time already. Things would have been better if he had a child of his own."

My breath stiffened upon hearing her words.

Did she find out about my pregnancy and somehow want to force words out of my mouth? ...

"I'd like you to get pregnant and give Gabriel a child."

No, she I guess didn't.

I looked at Ethan, who was staring right at me. If Gabriel was asleep, I wonder how she wants me to get pregnant... No way! His brother? That's absurd.

"No, not that way, Ava. Another medical way. I have something up with the doctor and I hope you won't mind artificial insemination.

I was stunned. I don't even know how I would tell them that I was pregnant or that my baby really belongs to Gabriel. I just stared at her in shock.

"Look, Ava, I understand you are still young and unprepared for all this, but the reward is great; if you have a child for my brother, you and his heir would inherit all of his estates and properties," Charlotte said.

I wasn't after his wealth. He will live. I know he will fight his way to be alive, but I am afraid it will take some time.

"Ava, I am not saying..."

"I will do it, grandma." Her face lit up in gladness.

We finished breakfast some minutes later, and Ethan offered to take me to the hospital.

I sat just beside him in the car, like I sat with Gabriel. I don't know if this is right, but I can't stay at the back and make him look like my driver.

Ethan was handsome, tall, and had a broad shoulder. I don't know if he also had abs, but he was nothing close to being like Gabriel. His cologne smelled so feminine that I wondered if he was a womanizer or, at worst, a gay man. I stared out the window at the beautiful town.

"I didn't know DC was this fine." I smiled to myself.

"Not just DC. This is our territory. Gabriel literally owns almost all this. Oh, before I forget, you will soon make a public appearance to the press, so brace yourself.

I just forgot for a few hours that I was married to a powerful billionaire

" No. Thanks. I have stage frights," I said coldly. The thought of it gives me chills already. I hate talking to strangers, much like I hate people touching me.

"So, why didn't you just stay with it?"

"I just did. And you didn't ask before."

"Not that, about the child in your womb. Why didn't you just tell everyone that you were pregnant?

My eyes widened in alarm as the thin line of my row jumped in surprise. I blink slowly, taking it in.

"How did you know about that?" My eyes slammed shut as if that would protect me.

"Ohhh, I saw the mail you sent." My gaze stood unblinking, trying to process what I had just been told, which means that the email could be a company's email and his secretary must have seen it.

"I went through my brother's phone and..." I heaved a sigh of relief. Patricia would have cursed me if she found out I was pregnant for her crush. "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine. I didn't know if they would believe that, and after showing them that cliche video, I don't think I have even fully watched.."I sighed.

"We will just go home and tell them. Trust me, my family is not so mean." Even his face looked mean, not to mention the cold, suspicious gaze Charlotte will throw at me.

"Count me out. You can tell them yourself, please."

"That's what I just said. ' I will just go home and tell them'"

 "No, you said 'we'"

"Did I?" He was still focused on the road, just like his brother was, ignoring me as if talking to me was a waste of time.

The rest of the journey was in silence. My eyes strayed to my phone. It sat dark and silent next to my handbag, but that didn't stop me from waiting anxiously for a call from my stepmother. I guess she would be enjoying the million dollars that she exchanged me for.

I should just call her and get it over with, but I couldn't bring myself to leave my world of half misery and half ignorance. I don't want to find out that she didn't take my father back to the hospital with that money. The possibility of that scares the living daylight out of me.

 Focus.

I took a deep breath and straightened my shoulders as the car halted at a stop.

At the hospital, I was registered for antinatal care, and I did some ultrasounds. I gasped for breath as I saw the TV display on the screen. I'm not pregnant with just one child. They were four gestational sacs growing inside of me.
