"Okay, okay! I'm going to do that," said Beth, pressing her phone to her ear.
"I don't trust you. I know you're going to bail off," said her best friend, Emma, on the other side of the call. "But know that if you do that this time as well, never call me again."
Rolling her eyes, Beth replied, "For your kind information, I'm at the airport to pick up Kevin with the marriage certificate in my hand. And you know what the plan is?"
"What?" asked Emma, her voice laced with amusement.
Sounding excited, she replied, "I'm going to place the paper in his hand, and when he reads it, he'll understand. This way, I won't have to speak a word to make him comprehend I am so ready to marry him."
"Sounds amazing when said. Let's see what comes next," Emma replied sceptically.
"Fine, I will call you after I turn from Miss to Mrs! Bye!" Beth hung up and took a deep breath, feeling nervous but determined.
She clutched the marriage certificate tightly as she scanned the crowd for Kevin's arrival. When she finally got the sight of him in the distance, she felt a jolt of emotion course through her.
Hastily shoving the phone back into her pocket, Beth felt her heart pounding loud as she watched Kevin from afar. With one hand in his pocket and the other dragging his luggage behind him, he took careful steps on the white tiles of the airport floor, his attention focused on something else entirely.
Despite her best efforts to stay calm and composed, Beth couldn't help but feel goosebumps crawl all around her skin as she took in Kevin's appearance. He was as strikingly handsome as ever, with chiselled features and piercing blue eyes that seemed to cut through the surrounding crowd. She couldn't help smiling, seeing how good he looked.
Even after all this time, she couldn't deny that he still had a powerful effect on her. Why wouldn't he? After all, he was her husband-to-be.
Taking a deep breath to steady herself, Beth gripped the marriage certificate tight, hoping that Kevin would notice her presence soon. She knew that this was her chance to finally make things right between them, but the thought of confronting him still made her feel incredibly nervous.
As Beth watched Kevin walk out of the airport, her heart sank. She had been so focused on trying to get his attention that she hadn't noticed him walking right past her. Panicked, she ran after him, calling out his name desperately.
"Kevin! Kevin!" she shouted, hoping to get his attention before he disappeared into the crowd.
Just as they were about to exit the airport, Kevin finally heard her and glanced over his shoulder in disbelief. He couldn't believe that Beth picked him up, despite his specific instructions to the contrary. Anger simmered inside him as he took in her nervous wave and panicked expression.
"What the hell are you doing here?" he demanded, turning to face her. "I told you not to come."
Beth nervously approached him and tried to explain her actions. "We have been apart for three months, so I thought--"
But Kevin interrupted her, his eyes narrowing. "Why are you acting like we are lovers?"
His words hit her hard, and she finally realised the truth. Despite being together for a year, Kevin had shown none real affection towards her. He had not shown any of him being lover with her nor any intention of marrying her.
Still trying to keep up with composure, she kept on smiling nervously and stammered, "Why… Why are you saying that? I just wanted to surprise you." She hoped to diffuse his anger.
But her smile faded quickly when she noticed a woman approaching him from behind. The woman wrapped her hand around his arm possessively, and she felt hurt. But trying not to overthink, she darted at him for an explanation.
When he stood there without saying a word, she felt her heart drop to her stomach.
She tried to mask her pain, but her trembling voice betrayed her as she questioned, "Who... Who is she?" Her flushed face was mirroring the fragility of her shattered dreams.
Kevin's prideful response cut through her like a knife. "I wanted to save this introduction for later, but since you're already here, let me introduce you to her. She is Helena, my wife."
His last words made Beth's world crumbled around her. The reality of Kevin's disregard for their marriage and his choice to replace her with another woman weighed heavily upon her. It was a bitter pill to swallow, a reminder of her insignificance in his eyes.
As a mixture of shock, hurt, and anger coursed through her veins, she fought to hold back the tears that threatened to spill. The pain etched across her face, though she tried to keep it hidden, spoke volumes of the turmoil raging within her.
In that one heart-wrenching moment, Beth's world shattered, and it left her to grapple with the wreckage of her broken dreams. The future she had envisioned had crumbled before her eyes, leaving her to question her worth and the choices that led her to this point. At one point she even hated her late father who had lead her to that painful moment.
Still, she tried to keep the pain off her face as she muttered, "You... are kidding, right?" But his response confirmed her worst fears.
"No, I'm not," he replied coldly.
The rage built inside her. "If she's your wife, then who am I?" she demanded, her voice trembling with emotion.
"Nobody!" he replied instantly, before turning to pace away with Helena.
Despite her best efforts to move on and accept the situation, Beth couldn't help but feel a twinge of bitterness as she watched them walk away together, a knot forming in her stomach.
Feeling hurt and betrayed, she tried to move on and accept the situation, but the pain lingered, as if it was her best friend.
The paper in her grip was now wrinkled and ugly, mirroring the state of her heart. Just moments ago, she had felt a rush of happiness, but it had been short-lived and turned ugly.
With a heavy heart and feet trembling in despair, she hastily made her way towards the washroom, desperate to find a momentary refuge from the overwhelming emotions threatening to consume her. But in her blind rush, she collided with someone; the impact causing both of them to stumble and nearly lose their footing.
Furious, the stranger grumbled, "Watch where…"
Overwhelmed by her emotions, Beth didn't even spare a glance at the stranger's face or hear him out. Instead, she instinctively flung her arms around him, seeking solace in his presence. The weight of her pain pressed against him as her tears flowed freely, wetting the fabric of his sturdy embrace.
At that moment, it didn't matter who he was or what their connection might be. All that mattered was the relief she found in his arms, a fleeting respite from the heartache that threatened to consume her. His mere presence provided a fleeting sense of comfort, a lifeline in her sea of despair.
The stranger, taken aback by her sudden embrace, hesitated for a moment before his own arms encircled her trembling form.
"Just in case you feel like, 'Why me?' it is not just you. It is everyone fighting their own battle. It is just that everyone is an expert at hiding it. And you, too, must learn it or else be ready to get enlisted in the list of weak and get dominated your whole life!"
Suddenly aware of what she had done, she quickly pulled away and, without looking at his face, shuddered an apology. "I am sorry!" Then she turned and ran away, not daring to look back.
