I spring to my feet as Coops growls his gaze fixed on the door. I glance over and see the woman standing there, her left leg and arm broken and blood gushing from her gaping neck.
"So you can turn into one after death interesting." I remark aloud. "Coops, you should look away, bud." I say aloud, throwing my hammer at the girls head.
She crumples instantly to the floor, and I retrive the hammer from her gaping head. "Luckily aiming for the head does work, but that was awfully fast to turn into a zombie. I'm sorry I had to do this."
Coops and I make our way to the backyard of the house. Spotting a nearby shovel I grab it and start digging a hole with the loyal help of the dog.
Once the hole is deep enough I hop out of the hole and go inside to grab the corpses for burial. I drag them outside and throw them into the hole, covering them up with dirt.
"I wish there was more that could have been done to prevent this." I mutter, folding my hands in prayer, hopping a clean send off for the two people.
(It's not like there is an afterlife, but if there is, I hope they find peace there.)
Next I scavage the house for useful items like bags of dog food, bowls, knives, and forks. Hopping into the car, patting the seat next to me, Coops hops in and sits in the passenger seat, looking out of the window whimpering.
"It'll be fine, little buddy. Let's continue our way to the town." I reassure him.
We continue to drive for another twenty minutes before the puffs of smoke come from the engine.
"Oh what the hell! I can't drive now, and we'll have to walk. What about the groceries!" I exclaim frustrated, throwing my hands in the air.
Opening up the hood of the car, I see the engine has a large hole in the side, likely because of how fast I drove it earlier.
I turn on my phone to find out that I still have a signal.
( I wonder if my parents are okay... but what's the point all they'd want if they were alive is more help that's all they've asked of me.) I sigh scrolling though my contacts.
Finding my father and dialing the phone rings for several minutes before a recorded message playes. "I'm sorry but the person your trying to contact isn't available. Please try again"
"Heh what was I thinking? I don't need them anyway all they did was kick me out when I graduated and asked me for money and food anytime they bothered to call....and to think tommorow would be my twenty second birthday."
I pull up the maps on my phone looking at how much longer until we would reach Hazlebub its a thirty minute drive but a six-hour walk.
"Considering it's one o'clock now I'd rather not arrive there so late without anything, so let's camp out here, bud."
I pour food and water in two bowls for coops while I go into the women's house again flicking light switches. However the lights don't shine a bit.
"I didn't think the power would be out so soon ill go check the breaker."
I enter the master bedroom the same room the zombie was found in and look around for a panel.
I find it above a dresser and open it up all the breakers flipped the right way I turn them all off then back on in case that may fix something.
I try to flick the lights on again but nothing happens. (Welp, either the power grids down or one of the utility poles are wrecked.)
Going into the backyard and searching around I spot a grill and take it trying to turn the gas on it seems it's out of fuel.
Searching around, I decide to gather some small sticks, and coops brings me a couple also. I throw them under the grill and unhook the propane srttung it aside.
Rummaging through an insulated bag, I had gotten and chilled food. I pull a pack of cheddar dogs out and start to grill them.
Coops barks and drools over the smell of crisp cooked food.
"Sorry you can't have any it has cheese inside." He whimpers as I tell him.
"Well, just in case you turn into a zombo dog, you can have one. I won't hold it from you."
I toss one into his food bowl and eat the remaining two with some ketchup on a fresh bun.
"Ima be back in a little bud stay here."
I decide to walk up the road for about twenty minutes before seeing a trucks side smashed into a utility pole.
"Guess that's why the house had no power. I'm glad i didnt turn around and walk back...wait if that car runs, I can keep my supplies!"
I walk up to the vehicle, noticing someone in the driver's seat. I try nagging him and feeling for a paulse to no avail. I decide to throw him into the bed of the trick and start the engine.
It knocks around for a while before turning on, and I drive back to the car. Going to the nearby house and digging another hole and burying him so he doesn't turn into another zombie.
I move all the luggage from the car into the back seat and bed of the truck before the sun starts to set.
I and coops lay down in my now empty car and sleep until the morning getting up Coops whining and my head pounding.
(Is this due to being bitten? Is that why coops is whining) I think to myself with my hand on my head.
I head inside and take a quick shower the water turning cold very soon as there's no electricity for heating.
(Now to find some clothes) I search around for pants, yet they weren't my size. However, the sweat pants in the drawer fit snuggly.
Hoping into the truck coops, sitting in the passenger seat. I hit the gas and start to drive toward our destination once again.
