"Just think about the positive part of it," Malia encouraged, her fingers deftly weaving an ornate decoration into Khalilah's beautiful black hair. "Even though there might be none," she added with a rueful smile.
Khalilah nodded, trying her best to remain calm. She knew Malia could feel the slight tremors that coursed through her body each time she touched her. The fear was almost overwhelming, but Malia's presence provided a small measure of comfort.
"You will be fine," Malia assured her, planting a gentle kiss on her cheek. "You're stronger than you know."
"Thank you," Khalilah replied softly. "And you? Where will you be?"
Malia hesitated, a sad look crossing her face. "Um, you might not see me for a few days," she confessed. "Since you will be in His Majesty's chambers, but after a few days, I will find a way to meet you. I promise I'll do my best to see you sooner."
