She jerked from her meditation with a start, but the room was dark and quiet save for the starosta's squeaky little snores. Going still, she lay on her pallet, reaching with all her senses, trying to find what had disturbed her thoughts. 

She did not sleep, but it had been necessary to observe the forms, as she had no room of her own at the starosta's. Soon she had learned a light form of meditation that seemed to pass enough for sleep to please the starosta, who came to check on her several times before settling for the night himself.

It was also effective for walling out the world around her, which was dangerous.
