Chapter 12 - It's not–a–date outing!

CECILE

I had been thinking about the peculiar way fate had woven our lives together. The universe had played its hand, and for some reason, against all odds, it led me to Tristan. It had been a month since that treacherous night, but the memories remained as vivid as if they had occurred only yesterday.

Every corner I turned and every shadow I encountered seemed to be whispering Tristan's name. I had hoped that by avoiding Elderon, I could sever the ties to that memory. However, with each passing day, the allure of that mysterious man and the enigma surrounding him only grew stronger.

The following day, there was a noticeable tension in the air between Tristan and me as we left many words unsaid. Both of us were still attempting to fully understand the events that occurred the previous night; however, the weight of hidden knowledge burdened us even further.

As I walked through the lavish halls of Tristan's mansion, a gentle breeze brought the familiar fragrance of pine and musk, suggesting that he was close by. It provided both comfort and torment simultaneously.

Tristan was in the study, where the soft light streaming in through the tall, curved windows had highlighted his figure. He appeared to be lost in thought, his fingers tapping in a rhythmic manner on the intricately designed wooden desk.

As I entered, he glanced up, his typically sharp eyes displaying signs of fatigue.

"I noticed that you are awake early," I commented as I poured a cup of coffee for myself.

Tristan placed the papers to one side and offered me a weary smile. "Always am. There are many things that need to be taken care of."

A pause ensued, accompanied by an uneasy silence that lingered between us while I delicately sipped from my cup.

"Why..." I began with hesitation, questioning, "Why have you not talked about that night from a month ago?" About the reasons behind why I left or my decision to return."

His gaze met mine, possessing the familiar and unsettling intensity that never failed to unsettle me. He spoke gently, saying, "Cecile, I trust you. I understand that you had your reasons. Our circumstances were unassuming and perhaps even peculiar."

I recalled the night when I'd run from the wolves and stumbled upon his mansion. "Yes, but-"

Tristan interrupted, standing and moving closer. "Listen, I remember that night, the fear in your eyes when you ran into my home, seeking refuge. Life's a maze, and we just have to navigate through it."

I found myself wearing a small smile, pleasantly surprised by his response. Tristan, although he appeared tough on the outside, always possessed an uncanny ability for understanding.

I couldn't even begin to imagine all that I might have missed during those months while I attempted to understand what had gone wrong on that day.

Noticing my thoughtful look, he suggested, "You know, it might be nice to have a day off. I would like to experience a different environment. Name a place, and I will accompany you to that destination."

I playfully teased, raising an eyebrow and saying, "Oh?" Am I being asked out on a date by Tristan, the intimidating leader of a Mafia? That is quite a captivating headline."

His cheeks were tinted a faint shade of red. "What? No! I'm... I just thought—"

I chuckled and interrupted him, saying, "Tristan, just relax. I'm only teasing. I would love to go out. Perhaps in a tranquil location, far away from the current state of chaos."

He formed a smirk with his lips. "Then we have a date. Oh, wait, I mean, it is not—"

I chuckled at his flustered state, then took hold of his hand and gently guided him out of the chair. "Let's plan our 'not-a-date' together."

As we approached the door, Tristan suddenly came to a halt, causing me to almost lose my balance. "Wait, where are you taking me?"

I winked, "To a location where even a formidable Mafia leader can relax and lower his defenses."

"You are lying, and you know it." Tristan had a grin on his face while he observed my expression. "However, I am willing to participate."

I replied with a mischievous glint in my eye, "But first, we should naturally select something for our outing! Please hurry up, or else I will have to forcefully bring you there."

Tristan smiled and extended his hand. "Of course, as you desire, my lady."
