Chapter 1 - I Think I Have...

"Every Lion must learn to man his own Pride one day..."

Those words were the last words one of my guardians told me before passing away. I miss him till this day, but his words spoke to me. I didn't plan on letting him down, I couldn't let him down.

{Day: October 30th}

{Time: 10:30 AM}

{Location: Warren Dr.}

I got ready for the day and grabbed the keys off the counter. I walked outside my apartment then headed toward my car. As I looked around, I grew tired of the same scenery every day. I was 21 still working dead end jobs, trying to make ends meet. I needed a change, a good one. A change that would let me have a better future and some excitement.

As I got into my car, I started then sighed softly. My phone began ringing and I turned down my music. I answered it and put it on speaker. "Hello?"

"Hey Sunshine, I'm just calling to check up on you. Are you still okay down there?" My mom asked.

"Just a few more days before I return to Texas. Once I get everything together, I'll return." I said.

"Okay. Just know if things don't go well, you can always come back to get back on your feet." My mom responded.

"I know Mom." I said and smiled. "I'm gonna go meet up with a friend, I'll call you later."

"Okay. Love you." She said.

"Love you too, Mom." I said and noticed she hung up. I set my phone down, put my car on drive then set off.

I drove to my friend's house in deep thought. Things were getting hard in the world now. So bad that I had to downgrade to upgrade again. I didn't plan on staying like this forever. I couldn't stay like this forever. I needed change.

Once I made it to my friend's complex, I parked my car and got out. I made my way to her front door and knocked in it. She came to the door and opened it. She smiled and let me in.

"Hey, Bry...I didn't know you were coming over today.." She said and closed the door behind herself.

"Sorry for not letting you know ahead of time, but it's kinda hard in this town now with everything that's been going down recently." I said and sighed as I sat on the couch.

My friend sat down next to me and sighed softly. "Yeah I know..."

My closest friend...her name is Lynn. We've been friends since middle school, for seven years to be exact. While everyone else from this small town has either betrayed me or forgotten about me, Lynn is the only thing person to have stuck by my side. We've been through a lot together...Our bond and connected were different.

"How is your dad doing?" Lynn asked.

"He's doing fine. Counting down the days that we see each other again, y'know. I miss my folks who are in Texas, but what can you do." I said and looked at the ceiling.

Lynn placed her hand on mine and smiled. "Don't worry, you'll see them again soon..~"

I looked at Lynn and smiled back at her. We just stared at each other...Every time I'm around Lynn it's like I get butterflies, but I just know I can never obtain her. This time I decided to make my move. She watched me and didn't move back.

We were inches away from kissing, but she looked down... slightly turning her head. She grew shy and pulled away.

"I'm sorry...I'm just not ready for this right now I guess.." She said shyly.

"Nah you're good..." I said softly and pulled away, sitting back in my seat.

It was a bit silent now. It wasn't awkward, but it definitely wasn't all too pleasant. Lynn decided to break the ice and smiled a bit.

"Remember that time in middle school...when we were sitting in a group with my cousin and his girlfriend and you asked us if we could have any superpower what would it be?" Lynn asked.

"I...I would rather forget my cringiest era of my life..." I said and chuckled softly.

"Come on, you may have been a dork, but...you were my favorite dork..." Lynn said and leaned against me.

I looked at her and smiled. "To answer your question...yes I remember it. Why?"

"I would like to have the power over the waves...You know the water...I dunno...Does that sound boring?" Lynn asked.

"It does." I chuckled softly.

Lynn smiled and wrapped her pinky finger around mine. "It's what I would wish for...I don't have too many ideas about what I want unlike you...~"

"It's alright..." I said and smiled.

We just sat together on the couch for a bit, reminiscing about the old times together. Together we had so much to talk about and because of that, it always hurts when I have to prepare to tell her goodbye when I move away for the last time.

My phone began buzzing and I took it out of my pocket then looked at it. "Shit... I'm gonna be late."

Lynn softly whined as she held my arm, not wanting me to get up. "Call out at least one day..."

"I can't...you know why I have to work, Lynn. Why won't you just move out there with me..?" I asked and looked at her.

"I can't afford to move out...I wish I had the funds to move like I want to. Maybe some time in the future..?" Lynn said and smiled sadly.

I smiled back then got up. "Trust...one day I'm gonna help you move out of Mississippi and bring you to Dallas with me. You can count on that." I said.

"Okay.." Lynn giggled softly.

I waved goodbye then left the apartment. I walked down to my car and got in then made my way to work. I worked in retail where I talk to some of my old friends around Warren.

I walked into my job and clocked in then went into the back. "Yooo!"

"Aye, Bryson! My man!" One of my coworkers said and walked toward me. He dap me up and smiled at me.

"Yo, Tyler. Slow day today huh?" I asked.

"Hella slow. You'd think since tomorrow is Halloween, motha fuckas would be in and out this bitch, but shit no one came through." Tyler said and walked back to his seat.

I sat beside my other coworker. "Sup, Chloe."

"Hey, Loser." Chloe said and took a hit from her vape pen.

"Y'know one day that shits gonna kill you." I said and chuckled.

"Says the guy who smokes weed and uses carts." Chloe said and looked at herself on her phone, doing poses for a picture.

"Yeah aight." I said.

Tyler and Chloe were two good friends of mine. We immediately clicked after my first day working here and ever since we've been cool with one another. Chloe has a crush on me, but she's pretty bad at expressing it.

"Yo, there is a Halloween Party tomorrow night at Rashaad's House. He told us to pull up. He also wants you to invite your shorty Lynn." Tyler said.

"Not fucking happening. He's cool and all, but he keeps trying to hit on Lynn and she obviously doesn't want him. I'm tired of him trying to get at her. Shits annoying." I said.

"Is it because you have a thing for her?" Chloe asked as she filed her nails.

"It's way deeper than that. Lynn and I have a connection...I deep one at that... I'm not gonna let him do shit to her." I said.

"Look at Mr. Serious here. Bro's trying to protect his girl." Tyler teased and playfully punched my arm.

I chuckled softly and shook my head.

{Day: October 30th}

{Time: 7:30 PM}

{Location: Fashion Central}

I turned out the lights of the store and walked outside with Chloe. I walked with her to her car. She turned around and leaned against her car. I stood in front of her and placed my arms against the roof of the car.

"Y'know, you should really consider a safer option...I don't want you to flatline on me too early.." I said.

Chloe smirked at me and took a small hit from her vape and gently let the smoke hit my face as she blew it. "Thanks for the tip..~"

I looked at her then let out a sigh then smiled a bit. "At least use it with moderation.." I said and stroked her chin.

Chloe blushed as she watched me walk off. "See you tomorrow..~"

"Yeah..." I said as I waved.

I looked at the sky as I walked to my car, noticing the sky was growing darker. I stopped walking when I noticed the moon shine purple. I squinted a bit then grunted as a ray of moonlight hit me. My body began to feel slightly weird, but it went away after a few seconds.

I shrugged it off then walked to my car, got in and went home for the night.

...

I made it home and walked up to my apartment then walked inside. I walked to my room and collapsed on the bed. I was so unnaturally tired that I decided to skip dinner for tonight and wanted to only sleep.

I felt cold as I slept then suddenly everything became warmer. My bloodstream acted differently. I couldn't explain it, but it had a reverse flow to it. I could feel the stream reversing, but it felt normal to me. I don't know what was happening to me, but I knew things were going to change once I woke up.

{Day: October 31st}

{Time: 8:30 AM}

{Location: Warren Dr.}

I woke up due to the sound of my alarm. I groaned softly and sat up on my bed then stopped my alarm on my phone. I had missed calls and messages from Tyler telling me to hop on the game and a few from Chloe wanting to smoke with me.

I decided to just leave them before now. I got out of bed and help my throbbing head. My head was killing me and I didn't know why. As I walked into the kitchen, I opened one of my cabinets then grunted as something quickly fell out of the cabinet and I quickly caught it. I was a bit astonished but didn't think to hard about it..

I got ready for the day and planned to visit Lynn this morning as I've always done. As I walked outside, I heard gunshots and took cover immediately. The sounds of gunfire was miles away, but I could hear them clear as day where as no one else heard them. I looked like a total fool, but just stood up and walked to my car.

'What the hell is going on with me this morning..?'

I got in my car then drove off. As I drove to Lynn's apartment complex, a child quickly ran into the street. I instinctively stopped the car before realizing she was there and the child looked at my car with it being inches away from her face.

A few people murmured and took video of it. They were impressed by my reaction time and some clapped. I was even more freaked out because I realized that my senses had grown stronger.

"This is so weird...what is happening right now..?" I said to myself.

{Day: October 31st}

{Time: 9:30 AM}

{Location: Clay Avenue}

I made it to Lynn's complex and knocked on the door. Lynn opened the door and peeked then opened it fully, letting me in. She noticed I was looking a bit worried.

"Bry... What's wrong?" Lynn asked then walked toward me.

I looked at Lynn and held her shoulders. "I might sound crazy, but I think I might have superpowers..."
