Chapter 219 - Canteen meet again

Locke returned to the academy's mission hall after half a month of recuperation.

He was here to submit his mission today.

"Herr Locke, please follow me!" The staff member in charge of receiving Locke led him to a room on the second floor of the mission hall.

Locke had only been to the second floor of the mission hall once, and that was when he'd received the ghost extermination mission thanks to Joaquin.

Now that Locke was a high-rank Knecht, his strength and the treatment he received had greatly improved. Only high-rank Knechts like him could enjoy the privilege of being in a private room on the second floor.

Although there were many knights going in and out of the mission hall to accept and submit their mission fees, only a handful of them were high-rank Knechts like Locke.

Having reached this level, they were entitled to enjoy the private rooms on the second floor.

Locke took out one mission item after another from his spatial ring. The head of a German owl, the eyes of a bramble fish, the heart of a rock frog, the claws of a green arrow monkey and the horn of a mountain-shaking rhinoceros were all of Locke's rewards in the past two months.

Apart from the drill pangolin that ran away and Locke didn't get its tail hammer, Locke's success rate was one of the highest among all the knights.

"As expected of a high-rank Knecht, Herr Locke. You've almost completed all of these difficult missions," complimented the staff member.

He was in charge of almost all of Locke's missions in the past two years. He was sure that Locke was still a mid-rank Knecht two months ago, which meant that he'd completed these missions before his breakthrough.

These were missions that even high-rank Knechts couldn't easily complete.

The staff member sincerely admired Locke. Now that he'd become a high-rank Knecht, he needed to accompany him carefully.

Locke laughed and waited for the staff member to calculate his rewards.

The rewards for the missions he'd risked his life to complete were the highest he'd received in the past few years. None of them were less than a thousand gold moores.

Locke had paid a hefty price as well. He now had less than twenty grams of blood essence left.

"That's a total of six hundred and fifty gold moores!" The staff member smiled and handed Locke six gold cards and a bag of money.

Locke didn't leave immediately after receiving his reward. Instead, he chatted with the staff leisurely. "Are there any missions that high-rank Knechts can take on?"

"Yes, of course." Of course, the staff knew that Locke was a mission maniac. He thought that Locke was going to take on another mission.

There were many missions for high-rank Knechts in the hall downstairs, but there weren't many of them. If one wanted more comprehensive information, they would have to go upstairs. This was also the reason why a private room was specially prepared for high-rank Knechts.

Three pages of mission reports were handed over to Locke. Each report was densely packed with detailed records of the missions. There were hundreds of missions in total.

Locke's previous missions, such as the slaying of the Munich Owl, were also included, but they were at the bottom of the list.

The first mission at the top of the three-page report was, 'Team up to kill the base-rank Mountain Monitor Lizard', 'Steal the saliva leaf in front of the nest of the high-rank Flying Heron', and 'Head to the Blue Valley to catch the soulfish'.

The corners of Locke's mouth twitched as he looked at the three missions that occupied the top of the list.

Whether it was killing a base-rank major monster or stealing something in front of a high-rank major monster, they were all fantasies to Locke.

As for the 'Head to the Blue Valley to catch the soulfish', Locke had never heard of such a place before, nor did he know what a soulfish was.

Most likely, it was the same as the previous two missions, which were almost impossible to complete.

"What's wrong, Herr Locke? Have you made your choice?" asked the staff, perhaps noticing that Locke's expression was strange.

"Not yet." Locke shook his head. He'd just found a mission that was related to him in the mission list.

"Head to Filis to catch the Subterrane Dwellers?" Locke asked suspiciously. If he remembered correctly, the mission that he and Elaine had completed was in Filis.

"Oh, speaking of which, this mission is related to you too!" The staff smiled. "The remains of the Subterrane Dwellers were among the mission items you brought back. That's why the academy confirmed that there are Subterrane Dwellers there."

Of course, Locke hadn't forgotten that he'd sold the location of the Subterrane Dwellers to Billie's family and earned quite a bit of extra income.

"Do you want to choose this one?" asked the staff. "Many high-rank Knechts have chosen this mission recently."

"Not for now." Locke returned the mission form to the staff. "I'll look for you the next time I want to complete a mission."

"Alright then." The staff thought that Locke had just broken through and wanted to take a break.

Locke walked out of the mission hall and looked at the crowd of knights. He suddenly realised that he hadn't seen Elaine for a long time.

He recalled how he'd been tricked into becoming her fiancé once. A smile crept up the corner of his mouth.

He strode towards the teaching area of the Perseverance Academy. It was still class time. Countless junior knights were in the training field outside and the classrooms inside the teaching building.

Most of them were in their first and second years, and their strength was between a low-rank Knecht and a beginner-rank Knecht.

Locke didn't see anyone familiar after walking around, so he simply walked towards the cafeteria not far away.

Two years had passed, but the academy's cafeteria hadn't changed much. Locke hadn't been to the second and third floors yet, but he wasn't interested anymore. He was more than qualified to eat in the cafeteria on the upper floors.

He ordered a serving of salmon and looked for a seat by the window. Suddenly, his eyes lit up.

"It's not the end of class yet, is it?" Locke smiled at the female knight by the window.

It was Elaine. Her lunch was the same as always, and it was the cheapest minced meat.

"Locke?!" Elaine looked incredulous at first, but then she patted Locke's shoulder excitedly. "Long time no see!"

Locke grinned. "You've grown a lot stronger."

"Of course!" Elaine was still a low-rank Knecht, but she'd improved a lot since the time she completed the mission in the cave.

After chatting for a while, she asked, "I heard that you've become a high-rank Knecht?"

Locke shrugged. It wasn't a secret. Many of his classmates had visited him when he'd just broken through, but for some reason, Elaine hadn't come.

"I'm so envious of you! "We used to be in the same class, but now you're so much better than me." Irene complained.

"Hey." Locke smirked and asked, "Are you done eating?"

"Of course not. Can't you see?" She pointed at the remaining two-thirds of the minced meat on her plate.

"Don't eat this. I'll treat you to something else!" Locke pulled her up.

She retracted her hand at first, but then slowly loosened it and let Locke pull her.

"What do you want to eat?" She asked.

"Salmon!" Locke smiled.

"Cheapskate!" Elaine pouted.

...

"So, Locke, will you still treat me as a friend?" She asked.

"Of course," Locke answered without hesitation.

However, both of them knew that as Locke grew stronger, the distance between them would only widen. Locke would also rarely come to school in the future. High-rank Knechts had a high degree of autonomy in Princeton Academy.

They didn't know when they'd meet again.

Both of them tactfully didn't bring up the topic.

"Do you like swallowtail fish?" Elaine asked.

"It's not that bad."
