Chapter 64 - Old wolf

When the old wolf was still the alpha, the tribe it led settled in a rocky area on the outskirts of Morphey Forest. There were not many ordinary beasts living there, so it was not suitable for wolves to settle down. However, because it was a hot spot with a relatively strong fire element, the old wolf chose to live there.

Now that it had left the wolf pack, as a former wolf leader, the current wolf leader certainly wouldn't allow the old wolf to continue staying in the wolf pack. Living alone, the old wolf didn't have the protection of the wolf pack. As an old magical creature, it didn't have the right to live in the area with dense fire elements. Although it was barren, there were still many fire and rock magical beasts that were stronger than it.

The old wolf had searched the Bering Mountains for a long time. Because of the abundant sunlight in this area, a group of fire plants had grown there, which satisfied the old wolf.

Looking at the lack of a cluster of fire element fruits near its nest, the old wolf could not think of a reason in its poor brain. There were no herbivores nearby that dared to come to its nest.

There were only a few firecloud fruits, which seemed a little insignificant compared to the rest. The old wolf thought for a while and could not think of anything, so it returned to its nest and lay down to sleep. It had just gone to the leopard in the north to find food, so its stomach was now bloated. It was just right for a nap.

After all, the old wolf was old and did not have the drive it had when it was young. This time, it went to the territory of the leopard in the north to hunt secretly and did not alarm the leopard. There was not much difference between monsters and wild beasts. Although they understood the power of the elements, they were still wild beasts. In winter, they would be too lazy to move like other beasts. However, the advantage was that it was easier for them to hunt and they were even lazier than ordinary beasts in winter.

The old wolf, whose stomach was slightly bloated, quickly fell asleep as soon as it lay down. There were traces of thick water around its blind eye, and some of the wounds on its body also showed signs of rupturing. It seemed that the old wolf's hunting operation was not as easy as it appeared. However, the old wolf was experienced after all. Even when it fell asleep, its tail gently patted the ground. If there was any movement around it, it would wake up immediately.

When there were only ten days left before the arrival of winter, Locke and Angelina left the cave where they had lived for nearly a week. Based on their current position, it would take them at least a week to get out of the Bering Mountains. Their plan was to leave the Bering Mountains before winter.

Locke tied a large piece of turf to his back with a belt. It was both a cushion and a blanket for them to sleep on. This piece of turf was three times larger than the one they had before. It took them three days to make it. Without the shelter of the cave, they would have to spend the next few days in the forest. Without this piece of turf, they wouldn't be able to survive the cold nights.

In addition to carrying a large piece of turf on his back, he also had a few pieces of cured meat and a wooden pot hanging from his waist. The cured meat was marinated with salt crab meat. Although it hadn't snowed yet, the cold wind had arrived for the past two days. The cured meat that had just been marinated for a few days was frozen stiff. He felt that it wouldn't be a problem to throw it at someone. The wooden pots were filled with fresh water. There were four wooden pots, and the water in these pots was enough for them to drink for five days before they found a new water source.

Angelina wasn't fully armed like Locke, but she was also carrying a small bag. She tore off a corner of her torn dress and asked Locke to sew it. Locke had never seen such a material that was smoother than skin before, so he was very careful when sewing it, for fear of tearing the thin material. Fortunately, the quality of the princess's clothes was guaranteed, so Locke didn't make any mistakes.

"This is silk," Angelina said to Locke. "And it's the most precious silk."

Locke had only worn linen since he was a child. Faustian civilians could only wear linen, and the official definition was that only nobles could wear silk. Of course, no one would know if some rich people bought it secretly. Baron Cardoj and Master Solon were also nobles in the camp, but they usually wore their own armour, so Locke had never had the chance to see silk clothes.

Angelina's bag contained the fruits that Locke had collected. There weren't many of them, so it wasn't very tiring for Angelina to carry them. It wasn't that Locke didn't want to waste Angelina's strength, but Angelina took the initiative to share some of the burden. She wasn't someone who was willing to be a burden.

The night before leaving, Locke walked around the saltwater lake, but in the end, he didn't find the possible place where the salt crab king hibernated. When he told Angelina about this, she explained, "The salt crab has the potential to become a monster. Although they are still in the category of ordinary beasts, they have more of an instinct to avoid harm than ordinary beasts."

"There must be a monster similar in strength to the salt crab king nearby. Otherwise, it wouldn't choose to hide and hibernate alone. You've almost killed all of its kin, but it still hasn't come out, which means it's hibernating in a closed place where it won't be disturbed." As soon as Angelina finished speaking, Locke and Angelina looked at the centre of the saltwater lake. The salt crab was an amphibious creature, and the crab king was a good swimmer. The only place suitable for the crab king to hibernate was the bottom of the lake. Locke was extremely glad that he and Angelina hadn't stirred the saltwater lake too much in the past two days. Otherwise, the unknown strength of the crab king would have been enough to make Locke and Angelina, who hadn't fully recovered, suffer.

Speaking of the crab king, Locke thought of the brown wolf he had seen. That wolf was the beast that gave him the greatest pressure so far. It was definitely a monster, Locke thought.

Locke and Angelina headed northeast. They set off in the morning, and by the afternoon, they had reached the farthest part of the forest marked by Locke. It was also the place where Locke first saw the brown wolf. The two of them walked much slower than walking alone. Whether it was Angelina's physical exhaustion or the fact that both of them were carrying a lot of things on their backs, their speed was slowed down.

"Let's go, this place isn't safe," Locke said to Angelina, who was panting behind him.

Angelina pressed one hand on her knee and the other on her chest, panting. Angelina's physical strength was obviously exhausted. In fact, the two of them had walked a lot. According to the normal daily journey, they could rest now, but Locke was worried that they would meet the wolf again, so he decided to walk a little longer.

Seeing that Angelina didn't move for a long time, Locke sighed, walked over, and stretched out his hand. Angelina raised her head and glanced at Locke. She was panting, but she didn't say anything. She placed her white right hand in Locke's hand. Locke pulled Angelina along and continued to walk forward. Their goal was the hillside in the northeast. They hoped that it wouldn't be dark by then, Locke thought as he walked.

The old wolf was sleeping quietly in its nest. It had eaten a lot today. Under normal circumstances, it would sleep until it woke up hungry again. This would take one to two days. The old wolf's tail gently stroked the ground, as if stroking precious silk. As the sun set, the last ray of sunlight shone on the old wolf's belly. The old wolf rolled over comfortably and went back to sleep. Suddenly, it seemed to have sensed something. The old wolf's wagging tail stopped.

At the entrance of the cave, a black spotted leopard appeared. Its footsteps were light, like an assassin hiding in the shadows. Its shadow was long under the setting sun, blocking all the light in the cave where the old wolf lived.

Locke and the others were traveling at a decent speed. The moment the sun set, they finally arrived at Locke's expected destination. Angelina was like a deflated ball. She slumped on a rock and kept rubbing her feet. They had walked a lot today, and most of them were mountain roads. The road was not easy to walk on.

Locke removed the turf from his back, put aside the water and food, and started a fire. The place he chose was not bad. It was a depression on the shady side of the hillside, just enough to block the cold wind at night.

Locke didn't have the mood to look for food today. They could only eat what they brought with them for dinner. They only ate a few fruits at noon before continuing on their journey. They were hungry now. Locke started the bonfire and went back to the food to pick up a fatty salt crab cured meat. He skewered it with a stick and prepared to roast it. Locke still had some ground firecloud fruit powder in his trouser pocket. While roasting the meat, he skillfully took out some firecloud fruit powder from his trouser pocket and sprinkled it on. The aroma of the roasted meat immediately spread. Angelina, who was resting at the side, couldn't help but look up. She licked her lips and looked at the meat Locke was roasting.

The old wolf dragged its body full of scars as it staggered through the forest. It was already late at night. The bone-chilling cold wind was blowing fiercely at the old wolf. The old wolf's fur was still glistening with fresh blood. After the cold wind blew, the blood turned into ice shards and stuck tightly to the old wolf's fur.

The old wolf was ambushed. It was the work of the demonic leopard in the north. The old wolf had been hunting in the demonic leopard's territory for the past two days. Although it was very careful, it was still discovered by the leopard. This forest was only so big, and every demonic creature had their own strictly defined territory. Whoever crossed the boundary was a provocation to the territory.

Especially during winter, all the beasts in the Bering Mountains had a hard time. Vegetarians either chose to migrate to the dangerous Morphey Forest or the barren and cold Bering Mountains. Carnivores faced the same choice. Food was not easy to find. The old wolf couldn't hunt in its territory, and its neighbour, the demonic leopard, didn't have a good time either. This clever leopard would save money every time it came to winter and let its prey go free.

The demonic leopard that went out to hunt during the day suddenly found that a family of mountain antelopes that it hadn't killed had three dead.
