Chapter 29 - Gathering?

As Bai Shen and the others managed to reach the other side of the basement, which connected to the dorm building, he and the students breathed a sigh of relief.

If some zombies or other dangerous mutant creatures were hiding in that narrow space and ambushed them, it would have surely killed some of them.

Especially those who were weak and could barely defend themselves.

Not to mention that the group of people was, alas, starving because they hadn't eaten for entire days while waiting for the situation to improve.

Bai Shen was in front of the group, slowly opening the door of the basement that showed them a spacious room. Bai Shen and the others sneaked out in silence.

They didn't want to attract much attention as they made their escape.

"Stay behind me. I also want to see if there are other survivors inside the building," muttered Bai Shen.

"Perhaps I can try to save them too. If not, I will come back after making sure you are out of trouble."

Complicated feelings arose in the group's hearts as they heard what Bai Shen just said.

At first, they had their guard up against him, but he proved to them over and over again how wrong they were.

Even now, he was thinking of how better he could save other people without endangering them.

Putting themselves in his place, they realized a thing: it was impossible to do the same thing as him.

Of course, the group didn't think that Bai Shen wasn't only doing this to become a savior; he also did it for his own selfish reasons.

Like thinking that if he can obtain more people to help around his Territory, thus consolidating his faction, it would be much easier to survive in the future.

As Bai Shen was the first one to go and check the corridor, the others tried to peek outside too.

"Don't force it. If you attract some zombies and trouble Bai Shen, I won't hold back and will kick you out of the group."

Hearing Tang Yue's threat, the students quickly backed away, afraid for their lives.

'She's so scary.' They all thought in unison, seeing that she was still glaring at some of them.

No matter the time or place, curiosity would still get the better of humans. This holds true even in the Apocalypse.

Bai Shen quickly looked around for a while and was surprised that the place seemed to be zombie-free.

With not even one in sight. 'Let's focus a bit...' Thinking so, Bai Shen closed his eyes and tried to listen to his surroundings for a while.

His senses were, if looking at his status, at least 5 times higher than before. It wasn't impossible to hear a needle dropping 20 or so meters away.

And that was exactly what Bai Shen did; he tried to hear 'the needle drop.'

'There!' Opening his eyes, Bai Shen's gaze sharpened while looking above.

Based on his calculations, there should have been a strong hit, or better said, a strong bang above him.

'That should have been on the 4th Floor if I'm not mistaken.' Hesitating for a while, he turned around and walked towards the group.

"Tang Yue, let's get you guys out of here. I may have to return and check the other floors, since there may be some people alive up there too."

Tang Yue and the others were speechless, seeing Bai Shen urging them to leave so much.

'If you don't want us here, bro, just say it. Don't act like this.' Was probably going through their minds at that moment.

Rushing the group, while still paying attention to their surroundings, Bai Shen was once again surprised by the lack of zombie presence inside the building.

'Maybe the people on the other floors are filtering how many zombies are entering the building at once...?'

'But that shouldn't be possible.'

Shaking his head, Bai Shen tried to focus on the matter at hand: to quickly take Tang Yue and the others outside the campus, to his Territory, and then come back to check.

But since the path was quite clear, all that remained was to quickly pass those last few hundred meters before the gate.

Luckily, some zombies seemed to be gathering toward a certain direction.

'Unfortunately, they may be gathering there because they discovered something to eat... But I can't risk being surrounded by them right now.'

'Especially because these guys are with me. Even if I was alone, I still couldn't face off against such a big group of zombies.'

'Group of zombies...' Thinking of something, Bai Shen's expression changed for a second before it went back to normal.

He seemed to have thought of something, and it excited him.

"120, 130, 140... So around 165..."

Hearing Bai Shen muttering some numbers, the people couldn't help but become curious about what he was speaking about.

"What's that? Why are you telling us this?" Tang Yue also frowned as she asked. It didn't make sense to them why Bai Shen was spitting numbers at such a moment.

"There are around 165 meters until we reach the gate. So let's say... 30 seconds should be enough."

Tang Yue and the others were taken aback; they didn't think that Bai Shen was paying attention to such small details.

"I'll distract the zombies' attention, while you guys will dash towards the gate; after you lot exit through the gate, don't stop until you see a nearby store on the right side."

"Make sure you wait for me inside, while I'll try to make a safe escape, without allowing these zombies to follow me."

The group softly nodded at him; they had complicated emotions in their eyes, but most importantly, they were all grateful.

With a clear resolution in his eyes, Bai Shen started a countdown inside his head.

3... 2... 1...

"Now, move!" With a shout, Bai Shen charged in the middle of the nearest zombie pack.

He brandished his sword forward, instantly cutting two zombies into pieces.

Tang Yue and the others quickly ran toward the gate, without looking back at all. They knew what to do, and Bai Shen was doing the same thing.

"Fireball!" Opening the show with a skill release, Bai Shen was like possessed as he advanced through the zombies like in butter.

'I'm going to take that thing too...'
