Chapter 40 - Ruffling Feathers

Kaito burst into the infirmary like a rockstar, his entrance dramatic enough to wake the dead (or at least the wounded soldiers). The smell of sweat, blood, and herbal remedies hit him like a punch to the gut, but he didn't let that deter him from his mission: finding the lovely ladies of his batch and making their day a little brighter.

Scanning the room, his eyes landed on Mina Carolina, looking like a delicate flower amidst the chaos. Her arm was wrapped in bandages, and Kaito's heart skipped a beat (or maybe it was just his stomach growling from lack of food). Anyway, he swooped in like a hero, his grin flashing like a neon sign.

"Hey, Mina! What's with the fancy wrapping? Trying to make a fashion statement?" Kaito asked, winking at her like a pro.

Mina's eyes fluttered open, and a hint of a smile played on her lips. "K-Kaito... what are you doing here?"

"Just dropping by to check on my favorite batchmate," Kaito replied, winking at her again because why not? "Besides, I heard the infirmary was the place to be for the latest gossip and drama."

Mina chuckled weakly, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "You're always so full of energy, Kaito. I'm just glad to see you're okay after... everything."

Kaito leaned in, his voice taking on a playful conspiratorial tone. "Don't worry about me, Mina. I'm like a cockroach – impossible to kill. But how about you? What happened?"

Mina's expression turned serious, and she winced in pain. "I got caught in the crossfire during the Titan attack. Just a scratch, but it got infected. The medics are doing their best, but..."

Kaito's grin faltered for a moment, his concern genuine. "Ah, sorry to hear that, Mina. But don't worry, you'll be back on your feet in no time."

And then, because why not, Kaito leaned in and gave Mina's forehead a quick, gentle kiss. "Get well soon, okay?"

Mina's eyes widened in surprise, a blush rising to her cheeks like a sunrise. "K-Kaito..."

Kaito just winked at her and whispered, "Don't worry about it, Mina. Just a little something to speed up your recovery. And maybe, you know, make you feel a little better."

With that, he straightened up, still grinning from ear to ear, and gave Mina a thumbs-up. "I'll come back and visit you again soon. Take care, okay?"

Mina nodded, still looking a bit dazed, as Kaito turned to leave. He tossed her a casual wave over his shoulder, whistling a jaunty tune as he sauntered out of the infirmary.

As Kaito strolled through the chaotic streets, his carefree whistle echoed off the damaged buildings. He navigated through the crowds of people, his eyes scanning the area for his target: Annie Leonhart, the blonde loner girl. He had a feeling she'd be brooding somewhere, and he just couldn't resist the opportunity to poke some fun at her.

"Annie, I'm coming, baby!" Kaito called out, his voice dripping with sarcasm. The people around him looked at him like he was crazy, but Kaito didn't care. He was on a mission to annoy the stoic Annie.

Kaito made his way to the gathering spot, where most of the surviving cadets had congregated. He spotted Reiner and Bertholt among the crowd, but Annie was nowhere to be seen. Others like Jean, Connie and Sasha were also there, the latter silently chewing on a bread with reddened cheeks, Cute.

He remained careful to not be spotted by anyone as he caught faint words as they were talking, he was being discussed about. He had no interest in getting involved in there.

And beside that, he had to let the chicken named Sasha cook for some time, hehe.

He focused on her scent, courtesy of his super sensitive vampiric senses, and started tracking her down.

After a few minutes of searching, he found her in a narrow alleyway, kicking a wall with a mixture of frustration and anger. Kaito's grin grew wider as he approached her, his footsteps silent on the dusty ground.

As he got closer, he realized that his survival wasn't likely known to most people in his batch. The last they saw him was his struggling efforts against the highly abnormal Titan, and most would have assumed he was dead until Christa and the others "rescued" him. They might have told others by now, but with Annie here, she might not know...

Kaito decided to give her a ghostly surprise.

He materialized behind her, his sudden presence making her jump back with a startled scream (which she quickly stifled, not wanting to appear surprised). Annie's eyes widened as she turned to face him, her stuttering words tumbling out in a rush.

"H-H-How... how are you... alive, Kaito?"

Kaito's grin grew even wider as he teased her. "Ah, Annie, were you brooding in this corner because you thought I died? Were you sad and lonely without me?"

Annie's face flushed with embarrassment, and she tried to regain her composure. "I-I was just... worried about the situation, that's all."

Kaito chuckled, his eyes sparkling with amusement. "Worried about the situation? Or worried about me?"

Annie's expression turned stern, but Kaito could see the faintest hint of a smile playing on her lips. "Shut up, Kaito."

But Kaito was just getting started. "I mean, I know I'm a pretty important person, but I didn't think I was worth brooding over. Unless... you were worried about me?"

Annie's eyes darted back and forth, her mind racing with questions. How was Kaito alive? She had seen him struggling against the Titan, and she had assumed the worst. But here he was, standing in front of her, grinning like a fool.

A part of her was relieved, but she refused to show it. She was Annie Leonhart, after all. She didn't get emotional or sentimental.

But Kaito's teasing was making her skin crawl. She felt her face growing hotter by the second, and her embarrassment was turning into anger.

"You're... you're impossible," she muttered, her fists clenched at her sides.

Kaito just chuckled, his eyes glinting with amusement. "That's what they all say, Annie. But you have to admit, it's nice to see you all flustered like this."

Annie's anger boiled over, and she lashed out at him, her fist flying towards his face. But Kaito was too quick, and he dodged her blow with ease.

Undeterred, Annie swung at him again, and again, but Kaito dodged each blow with a laugh. Finally, on the third try, he caught her hand, pinning her to the wall.

Their faces were inches apart, Annie's eyes flashing with anger, Kaito's sparkling with amusement. Annie's face was flushed, her breathing quickened, and her heart was racing.

For a moment, they just stared at each other, the tension between them palpable. Then, Kaito spoke, his voice low and husky. "You know, Annie, you're really cute when you're angry."

Annie's eyes narrowed, her face growing even hotter with embarrassment. "Shut up, Kaito."

Kaito's lips brushed against Annie's, catching her off guard. She was still reeling from their intense stare-down, and her brain hadn't had time to process what was happening.

For a moment, they just froze, their lips touching, their eyes locked. Annie's mind was a blank, her body numb. She couldn't believe what was happening.

Then, Kaito deepened the kiss, his lips moving against hers with a gentle pressure. Annie's eyes fluttered closed, her body responding to the kiss despite her brain's protests.

It was a soft, gentle kiss, but it sent shivers down Annie's spine. She felt like she was melting into Kaito's embrace, like she was losing herself in the sensation.

When Kaito finally pulled back, Annie's eyes snapped open, her face flushed with shock and embarrassment. She looked up at Kaito, her expression a mix of anger and confusion.

"W-what was that?" she stuttered, her voice barely above a whisper.

Kaito just grinned, his eyes sparkling with amusement. "Just a little surprise, Annie. You looked like you needed it."

Annie's face grew even hotter, her anger and embarrassment warring for dominance. She opened her mouth to respond, but Kaito just chuckled and leaned in, his lips brushing against her ear.

"Besides, I've been wanting to do that for a while now, my dear Female Titan."
