Chereads / Amukelo: The Burdened Path / Chapter 356 - First Monster Encountered

Chapter 356 - First Monster Encountered

After a thorough review of the dungeon's layout and the daunting array of monsters documented within their guidebook, Amukelo and Eliss faced a pivotal decision. The larger, more open space they had initially fallen into was tempting as a probable main route but returning there meant risking another encounter with Leviathan, a gamble they couldn't afford. With heavy hearts and a resolve steeled by necessity, they opted to venture deeper into the dungeon's bowels, away from any potential paths the Leviathan might patrol.

Eliss, her mobility severely compromised leaned heavily on Amukelo as they moved. Each step was a painful effort, their progress agonizingly slow. Speed was their ally in escaping the dungeon's depths, yet their current pace made them vulnerable to whatever horrors lurked in the shadows.

As they navigated through the dimly lit corridors, the oppressive silence was suddenly pierced by an eerie, unnatural sound that sent a shiver down their spines. They paused, straining their ears against the quiet. The sound came again—a sort of scraping, clicking noise that seemed to echo off the stone walls from all directions. Turning towards the source, their eyes widened in horror as they saw a skeletal figure lunging towards them from the darkness.

The creature was a Marrow Lurker, as identified from the descriptions in their book. It was a ghastly sight, its elongated limbs allowing it to crawl along the dungeon floors and walls with a disturbing, fluid speed. The joints of its limbs bent at grotesque angles, unnaturally flexible and swift. Its skull was oversized, filled with an excessive number of sharp, jagged teeth that formed a perpetual, menacing grin. As it moved, it seemed to flow out of the shadows, its bony fingers extended like the branches of a dead tree, sharp and eager for flesh.

Amukelo and Eliss had only a moment to react. With no time to form a strategy and knowing Eliss's vulnerable state, Amukelo's first instinct was to protect her. As the Marrow Lurker launched itself at them, he acted with desperate haste, grabbing Eliss and throwing her to the side, away from the immediate danger. This move, while saving Eliss from being the creature's first target, left Amukelo exposed.

The Marrow Lurker seized the opportunity. With a horrifying agility, it redirected its momentum, its claws finding purchase on Amukelo's legs. A sharp pain shot through him as the creature's bony fingers slashed deeply across his thigh, drawing blood. At the same time, it grabbed his injured arm, the one already weakened and wrapped in bandages. Amukelo felt the cold, hard grip of the Lurker's fingers tighten, its unnatural strength crushing as it began to bite down, its teeth seeking to sever the limb protected only by his armor.

Despite the excruciating pain, Amukelo's survival instincts prevailed. Gritting his teeth, he reached for the sword strapped to his other side. With a swift motion driven by both fear and fury, he unsheathed his weapon and swung it at the skeletal horror. The blade sliced through the air, aiming for the creature's neck in a desperate attempt to decapitate it.

But the Marrow Lurker was not so easily defeated. Sensing the deadly intent behind the swing, it released its grip with a jerky, unnatural motion and leaped back into the shadows, evading the deadly arc of the blade. The creature's movements were swift, leaving Amukelo with nothing but the chilling echo of its screeching cackle as it moved into a safe distance from him.

Now Amukelo and the Marrow Lurker faced each other in the eerie half-light of the dungeon, a tense silence stretched between them. Both seemed momentarily frozen in a standoff, measuring each other's next move. The monster's hollow eye sockets seemed to bore into Amukelo, its grotesque grin bared in anticipation. It had momentarily forgotten about Eliss, its focus fixed on its initial prey.

Eliss, seizing the moment of distraction, quietly retrieved her staff. Her fingers wrapped tightly around it as she began to chant, her voice low but filled with power. The incantation built around her, a shimmering veil of energy that crackled in the stale air of the cave.

Sensing the rising magic, the Marrow Lurker's attention snapped towards her, its body tensing to leap. But Amukelo, anticipating its move, acted with swift precision. As the creature sprung, he positioned himself strategically at its intended landing spot. His sword raised high, he met the monster mid-leap with a powerful swing. The Marrow Lurker attempted a desperate parry, its elongated limbs moving with unnatural speed, but it was no match for Amukelo's strength. His blade cut through the resistance, slicing deeply into the creature's skeletal form.

However, the Lurker wasn't subdued yet. In a last act of defiance, it swiped its clawed hand, landing a gash just below Amukelo's eye, a whisper away from a fatal strike. The monster, struck severely by Amukelo's sword, disintegrated into a cloud of dust, its existence snuffed out in an instant.

Exhausted and hurt, Amukelo stumbled and fell to his knees, the adrenaline fading as pain surged through his body. His breaths were heavy, his mind racing with concern. 'It was just one monster, and it did so much damage... It's not looking good,' he thought, his heart sinking with the realization of their precarious situation.

Crawling over to Eliss, who was struggling with her own mobility, Amukelo noticed the sadness etched deeply in her features. "I'm sorry, Amukelo..." she murmured, her voice thick with regret. "If not for saving me, you wouldn't end up with so many new injuries."

Amukelo looked at her, pain visible on his face but warmth resonating in his voice. "Don't worry, Eliss. It's nothing," he reassured her, attempting a comforting smile despite his grimace of pain. "If not for your spell, I would have had a much harder time dealing with this monster. We're in this together, remember?"

Eliss nodded, though her expression remained troubled, her eyes downcast, reflecting the flickering shadows on the cave walls. Guilt still lingered in her gaze, a heavy burden she carried silently.

Together, they continued their slow, painful progress through the dungeon. Amukelo's leg throbbed with each step, the deep cut from the monster's claw making it difficult to walk. He leaned heavily on his sword, using it as a makeshift crutch, trying to mask the extent of his injury. He didn't want to add to Eliss's concerns; her morale was as crucial as their physical health in this relentless environment.
