Chereads / Amukelo: The Burdened Path / Chapter 315 - Heroes Dilema

Chapter 315 - Heroes Dilema

As the gate swung open with a groan of ancient metal, a fleeting shadow darted through, so swift and silent that all anyone could register was a mere blur of movement. The air itself seemed to ripple with the passage of this enigmatic intruder, sending a palpable shiver of dread through everyone present. It was clear, even without seeing, that a formidable enemy had just entered the fray.

Amukelo, burning with the urgency to pursue, made a dash for the gate, his instincts screaming for him to follow the mysterious figure. However, his path was abruptly obstructed by a phalanx of remaining attackers who, despite the turn of the tide against them due to the reinforcements, formed a desperate and formidable barrier. They were now fighting defensively, their movements calculated to block and delay rather than to attack, forming a living wall that prevented any of the defenders from advancing.

The battle raged on, a chaotic dance of steel and willpower. As the defenders slowly gained the upper hand, Amukelo and Eliss spotted a fleeting opportunity—a slight gap in the enemy's defense. With a quick exchange of glances that communicated years of camaraderie and trust, they seized the moment and slipped through the thin opening. Ida's voice rang out behind them, laden with urgency and command, "Don't let them secure the artifact!"

Nodding in grim acknowledgment, Amukelo and Eliss dashed through the gate, their hearts pounding with the weight of their responsibility. Beyond lay a vast hall, its grandeur a stark contrast to the narrow confines of the gate passage. The hall, though not as expansive as the one behind the first gate, was nonetheless impressive with its high, arching ceilings and walls lined with intricate carvings that seemed to depict ancient legends and forgotten wars.

As they advanced, the sounds of combat echoed ahead, guiding them towards the source of the disturbance. Rounding a colossal pillar, they arrived upon a scene of fierce combat. The assassin they had been battling was locked in a deadly duel with a heavily armored guardian wielding a greatsword. The guardian, clad in armor that shone dully under the sparse light of the hall, was a formidable opponent, but he was clearly struggling against the assassin's ruthless efficiency and dark-empowered strikes.

Nearby, the figure that had earlier slipped through the gate—an agile, shadow-like figure—was standing beside a cluster of golems. These constructs lay inert on the cold stone floor, suggesting they had been deactivated or dispatched before they could be brought to bear against the intruders.

The clash between the assassin and the guardian reached a crescendo as Amukelo and Eliss watched, helpless for the moment to intervene. With a swift, precise movement that spoke of deadly skill and intent, the assassin plunged his blade into a tiny gap in the guardian's armor. The guardian staggered, a gasp escaping his lips, before collapsing in a heavy, lifeless heap onto the ground.

Silence fell for a heartbeat, the finality of the guardian's fall marking a grim turn in the battle. Now, the hall stood with only four combatants—Amukelo, Eliss, the assassin, and the shadowy figure by the golems.

The room, dominated by an ornate altar at its center, held an artifact encased within a cage that seemed to pulse with a power as ancient as the cavern itself. Eliss wasted no time, her actions swift and decisive. With a deft flick, she tossed a crystal, and summoned a phoenix in the place of the crystal, its fiery form magnified and intensified by the crystal's energy. This was no ordinary phoenix; empowered, it soared above, its wings casting fiery shadows on the stone walls.

Meanwhile, Amukelo charged towards the assassin, his resolve hardened, his movements a blur of speed and precision. As Eliss controlled the phoenix, a sudden shift occurred; the cloaked mage, now revealed a dark tome. From its pages, necromantic energy spilled forth, resurrecting the fallen heavy-armored guardian and summoning a horde of undead that clawed their way from the ground with eerie synchrony.

Amukelo's heart pounded fiercely in his chest as he recognized Valarian. With a strategic mind, Amukelo channeled his mana into one of the fallen golems beside him. The construct stirred to life, animated by his will, its movements clunky yet powerful. He directed this newly risen ally to intercept the assassin, aiding Eliss's phoenix in its fiery assault. "Focus your attacks on the assassin!" he shouted to Eliss, hoping to consolidate their efforts against the immediate threat.

As the golem lumbered forward to engage the assassin, Amukelo turned his attention to the growing swarm of undead. Each was formidable, perhaps more than the demon he had faced earlier. Despite this, Amukelo pressed forward, his swords slicing through decayed flesh and bone, his every strike precise and deadly. Slowly, he thinned their ranks, his focus absolute, yet part of his awareness remained sharply attuned to Valarian's actions.

Valarian, undisturbed by the chaos of battle, approached the altar and began chanting an incantation that seemed to draw on the very darkness of the cave.

Meanwhile, Amukelo was occupied by the undead, Valarian continued his incantation. Just as Amukelo got rid of most of the undead, the cage around the artifact began to fade, dissolving into nothingness as the spell reached its climax. He prepared to sprint towards Valarian to thwart whatever dark purpose he intended, a scream tore through the clamor of battle.

Turning towards the sound, Amukelo's eyes widened in horror. Eliss was in peril. An undead, its limbs breaking through the ground, had grasped her leg, pulling her down. Simultaneously, her phoenix, overwhelmed by similar foes, was quickly losing its advantage in the air. To compound the dire situation, the assassin, having evaded the phoenix and golem, was now advancing towards Eliss, his blade drawn and his intent deadly clear.

Meanwhile, Valarian laughed like a madman, "What are you gonna do now?! Hero?" His voice full of envy and hatred.

Time seemed to stretch and slow as Amukelo faced an agonizing decision. On one side, Valarian was moments away from claiming the powerful artifact, an act that could have untold consequences. On the other, Eliss, his close friend and comrade, was in immediate, life-threatening danger. The weight of the choice pressed down on him, each option fraught with irreversible outcomes.
