Chapter 306 - Call to Arms

In the shadowy remnants of what once might have been a bustling place of worship, now stood only the skeletal remains of a church, its stones darkened by age and neglect. A cloaked figure emerged from the gloom, his movements swift and purposeful as he navigated the debris-strewn path that led to the crumbling entrance. The church, with its broken pews and stained glass shards scattering dim, colored light across the floor, held an eerie silence—a stark contrast to the chaotic scene that had just unfolded at the Shogun's arena.

Inside the dark sanctuary, a chilling scene was set. A group of figures, all dressed in similar dark cloaks, gathered around a sinister red circle drawn on the ground. Candles flickered at its edge, casting long, dancing shadows and illuminating an artifact placed at the center. Their faces were obscured, their bodies still, as if awaiting a pivotal moment.

The newcomer approached what appeared to be the leader of this macabre assembly, standing closest to the circle. Without a word, he extended his hand, offering up a small rock etched with intricate runic diagrams. "I completed the mission, Master," he announced with a tone that carried both reverence and triumph.

The leader, upon receiving the stone, allowed a slow, menacing laugh to escape his lips. "Very well," he murmured, the sound echoing off the desolate walls, amplifying the darkness that seemed to seep from every corner of the ruined church. The group's anticipation grew palpably as their leader held the stone aloft, its runes catching the candlelight and casting eerie patterns on the cracked ceiling.

Back in the hall, the atmosphere was charged with urgency and fear. Sensei, his expression grave, turned to the Shogun, seeking answers amid the confusion. "What stone are you talking about?" he inquired, his voice steady yet filled with concern.

The Shogun, visibly shaken by the events, took a moment to collect his thoughts before responding. His voice, when he spoke, carried a weight of responsibility and dread. "I shouldn't reveal this, but now it doesn't matter anymore. This stone was the only entrance to the place where we were guarding one of the artifacts. No one knows about this stone or the place, except for a very few trusted guards of the artifact."

The revelation sent a ripple of shock through the assembled crowd. The implications were dire: if the enemy knew of the stone, it was almost certain they knew of the place as well.

"But if the enemy knows about the stone," the Shogun continued, his tone growing more urgent, "they most likely know about the place as well. We need to act fast."

His command was clear and resolute. "I will organize the mission instantly. Every stronger warrior in the city should be alarmed and prepare."

The Shogun's voice resonated with urgency and command throughout the grand hall. "We may have some time before the enemy strikes, but we cannot afford to waste a moment," he declared, his tone steeped in the gravity of their situation. Swiftly, he gave orders to inform all the city's strongest warriors, directing them to prepare for what might be an imminent confrontation. The hall buzzed with a renewed sense of purpose as messengers were dispatched, and the warriors began their preparations.

Amukelo stood somewhat apart from the flurry of activity, his mind racing with the events that had just unfolded. He was still processing his inadvertent role in thwarting an assassination when Yosue approached him, his expression one of genuine remorse and newfound respect.

"I'm sorry for doubting you," Yosue began, his voice sincere. "And thank you—truly, thank you for saving the Shogun." His gratitude was palpable, marking a stark contrast to the suspicion and tension of just moments earlier.

Amukelo, understanding the complexities of the situation, nodded graciously. "It's not a problem. Given what happened, you had every reason to think I was a traitor," he replied, his tone forgiving and empathetic.

Yosue, still marveling at Amukelo's prowess and quick action, continued, "I can't believe how strong you are. Are you joining us then, in our fight?" His curiosity was tinged with hope, seeking confirmation of a powerful ally in the battles to come.

Amukelo affirmed his commitment without hesitation. "That's exactly why I'm here—to stop Valarian," he stated firmly, reinforcing his purpose and dedication to their shared cause.

Yosue's face lit up with a mixture of relief and anticipation. "Thank you again, and I'll see you later," he said, clasping Amukelo's shoulder briefly before parting ways, a gesture that sealed their newfound camaraderie.

As Amukelo turned to rejoin his friends, he was intercepted by an elder man with a dignified bearing, introduced as Nakatashi Kiyoshi, Yosue's sensei. The sensei's eyes, wise and penetrating, seemed to measure Amukelo with a quiet intensity.

"Do you have some time before you head off?" Nakatashi inquired, his tone respectful yet carrying an underlying strength.

Amukelo, sensing the importance of this encounter, nodded. "I do."

"Meet me on the training ground," Nakatashi proposed a subtle invitation to perhaps share wisdom or training insights that could prove crucial in the days ahead. With a respectful bow to both Amukelo and the Shogun, he then departed, his figure retreating with the same calm authority with which he had arrived.

Returning to his friends, Amukelo found Eliss with a broad grin, her arms laden with bags of money. Surprised, he asked, "How did you get that?"

With a mischievous twinkle in her eye, Eliss revealed, "I bet my staff on you." Her smile widened as she saw his reaction, her gamble not only a testament to her faith in his abilities but also a windfall that would undoubtedly aid their forthcoming adventures.

Amukelo facepalmed, a mixture of exasperation and amusement coloring his features. Despite the gravity of their situation, this light moment brought a brief respite from the tension, reminding them of the bonds they shared. "Well, that was risky, but thank you," he said, his voice warm with gratitude. This money, unexpectedly acquired, would indeed be a valuable asset as they navigated the challenges ahead.
