Chapter 266 - Worm Strikes Again

The desert night unfurled around Amukelo and Eliss, a canvas of cold, clear darkness sprinkled with the silver dust of stars. Without the shelter of their tent, they combined their skills to craft an alternative. Amukelo, with precise mana manipulation, drew the sand into structured forms, while Eliss, with her command of the arcane, wove a spell that solidified these forms into a shelter of earth and magic.

Their creation stood against the desert's nocturnal chill—a dome of interlaced magic and sand that glowed faintly with the energy that held it together. Eliss surrounded their camp with a network of triggers, magical tripwires that would alert them to danger. She extended these defenses below the surface, mindful of the subterranean threats they had already faced.

Inside their makeshift haven, they wrapped themselves in jackets against the biting cold. The desert's nocturnal face was a stark contrast to its blistering days, a reminder of the land's extremes. Sleep, when it came, was fitful, their minds half-alert for any sign of disturbance.

In the deep stillness of the night, a trigger snapped. Both Eliss and Amukelo came to attention instantaneously, their hearts pounding, their breath misting in the frigid air. They scrambled to their feet, the silence of the desert pressing in on them with an almost tangible force.

Visibility was near nonexistent in the absence of fire. Reacting quickly, Eliss conjured orbs of flame that hovered in the air, casting a flickering light that pushed back the darkness. The flames danced, casting long, strange shadows on the sand, but revealed no immediate threat.

They stepped outside, scanning the perimeter. The cold bit at their skin, but they moved with practiced caution, Eliss's magic lighting their way. Amukelo extended his senses, reaching out with his mana to feel for the vibrations of danger.

It was then he detected it—a subtle shift beneath the earth. In a burst of adrenaline, he saw the ground bulge slightly under Eliss's feet. With no time to shout a warning, he acted on instinct, lunging forward and pushing Eliss clear.

The sand where she had stood erupted as the worm burst forth, its maw gaping wide in silent fury. Sand and cold air mixed in a maelstrom as the creature turned its baleful gaze upon them.

"We need to finish this now," Amukelo said through gritted teeth, his breath forming clouds in the cold air. The creature before them was relentless, but so were they, and they could not afford to let this threat linger.

Eliss nodded, her hands already moving in the intricate patterns of spellcasting. The fire orbs blazed brighter, ready to sear flesh or light their next move. Amukelo squared his shoulders, the memory of the last encounter with the worm fueling his resolve.

The giant worm and Amukelo charged at each other, a clash of wills and strength under the cold gaze of the desert stars. The worm's gaping maw opened, revealing the cavernous depths lined with razor-sharp teeth, each one a death sentence. Amukelo, with his swords drawn and his reflexes honed, performed a ballet of deadly precision, dodging the lethal bite at the last possible second.

His blades sliced through the air, aimed at the creature's underbelly, but it was as if he struck at shadows; his weapons met no resistance. The worm's hideous form twisted with unnatural speed, and Amukelo's eyes widened as he realized the diversion. The true danger was already upon him, a second attack from behind.

He would have been too late, but Eliss had not been idle. With a forceful incantation, she summoned a barrier of magic that crystallized into a wall of earth between Amukelo and the worm's strike. The creature's teeth clashed against the spell, sparks flying from the impact.

While the barrier held the larger worm at bay, a swarm of smaller worms surged towards Eliss. The sands around her erupted as they launched their attack, a multitude of voracious maws seeking flesh. Amukelo, eyes flitting between Eliss and his own assailants, knew he had to act swiftly.

With a powerful exertion of mana, he transposed Eliss's position with that of a hefty rock nearby. The smaller worms, deceived by the sudden switch, bore through the stone with terrifying ease, leaving it riddled with holes.

Amukelo turned back to the fray. The larger worm lunged at him with renewed fury. This time, Amukelo was ready. With one sword, he deflected the creature's advance, using its momentum against it. With the other, he launched a vicious counter-strike that sliced into the worm's flesh.

The worm recoiled with a thunderous shriek that reverberated through the desert, a sound filled with pain and rage. But Amukelo wasn't without any harm. His arm bled profusely from the attack that he wasn't able to deflect completely, but he ignored the pain, focusing on the beast before him.

Eliss, now at a distance, cast healing spells in an attempt to mend the wound on Amukelo's arm, her hands glowing with a soft light. However, the constant assault from the smaller worms demanded her attention, disrupting her focus.

Her protective spells holding against the smaller worms, redoubled her efforts to heal Amukelo. Magic swirled around her, a dance of light and energy that wove towards him, knitting flesh and sinew back together even as the battle raged on.

The desert became an arena, with Amukelo and Eliss at its heart, fighting not just for survival but for the chance to continue their journey, to prove that their spirit and resolve were as indomitable as the shifting sands themselves.
