Chapter 19 - Side Story Chapter Nineteen "The Price of Freedom"

On the 294th day after January 22nd – a date stuck in their minds, The day rg world changed – Tiffany and Alexia marked off yet another day in their hiding spot. But this wasn't any cozy hideout; it felt more like a terrible place ruled by mean people. And honestly, they were fed up with it.

Before everything went crazy, Tiffany lived a fancy life. Imagine getting anything you want, having a cool driver to take you wherever, and being taken care of by a super successful boyfriend. It was like she was a character in a movie.

She used to come from a regular family, but then she met this rich guy who swept her into a world of luxury. Now, her friend Alexia was totally different. Life for her was more about scraping by – not too poor, but not too comfy either. Alexia tried to help Tiffany see the real world, how tough things could be. But every time they talked about it, they ended up arguing.

Now, nothing from their old lives could've prepared them for what they were dealing with. Imagine no Wi-Fi, no power, and no good way to even take a proper shower. It's like all the easy stuff vanished overnight

Now, the situation was on the brink of intensifying as their daring escape plan came into focus. Len, one of the individuals to whom Tiffany had divulged their scheme, took it upon himself to reveal the entire plan to Badger. Initially, his intentions bore an air of benevolence, as if he aimed to protect them. But as he weighed his options, a different idea took root: aligning himself with Badger for a glimmer of privilege. Little did he grasp, however, that Badger held no affection for turncoats; to him, Len was not just a traitor, but an informant.

Upon absorbing this disconcerting news, Badger maintained a facade of ignorance, all the while orchestrating a covert countermeasure. Leveraging the uncertainty that shrouded their knowledge, Badger orchestrated a stratagem. His enforcers were dispatched under the pretext of a routine hunt, yet they stationed themselves strategically nearby, lying in ambush for any escapees. Among their ranks lurked Shane, a figure known for his merciless disposition, poised to quash any act of defiance by those attempting to flee.

Tension gripped Tiffany and her compatriots as the decisive moment drew near. Anxiety painted their expressions as they exchanged furtive glances, each bracing themselves for the impending chaos. Amidst this turmoil, Rollo, a member harboring apprehensions, confessed his fears to Tiffany.

"Tiff, I'm scared. I don't think I can go through with this," Rollo admitted, his voice betraying a tremor of uncertainty.

With resolve etched on her features, Tiffany responded, "We're past the point of no return. I'm about to give the signal." Her voice wavered but held unwavering determination.

Yet, Rollo's unease remained palpable, his tone escalating in volume before he caught himself, reins in his words. Tiffany, however, fixed him with a steely gaze, addressing his wavering spirit.

"If you're content to remain here in squalor, living like an animal, then by all means, stay. But for me, I have faith in our friend. I believe that if he's out there, life will be better than this. And if not, I'd rather meet my end out there than endure one more day with these wretches," Tiffany declared, her words carrying weight disproportionate to her diminutive stature.

With a final nod, Tiffany signaled the commencement of their revolt, and pandemonium erupted. Displaying unexpected prowess, they overpowered two of Badger's subordinates, wresting control with a degree of effortlessness that caught even them by surprise.

Tiffany and Alexia's mastery of water magic was exemplified by their tactical innovation. Rather than launching their water balls, they covertly approached their targets from behind. Skillfully employing the water surrounding their victims' heads, they hushed any potential outcry as their comrades held the captives in check, causing them to succumb to unconsciousness. The watery cocoons served to muffle the sounds that might have betrayed their subterfuge.

The strides Tiffany and Alexia had made in honing their water magic was evident in this feat. Relentlessly committed, they spent countless hours refining their abilities, surpassing their peers. In the chaotic world they navigated, they harbored a conviction that if anyone could restore a semblance of technological progress, it was Rome. With an engineer's ingenuity and a knack for problem-solving, he was their beacon of hope. And in her heart, Tiffany harbored an unshakable belief that Rome was, in fact, Alive – a sentiment that resonated deeply within her.

In the aftermath of their successful take down of another of Badger's henchmen, an air of accomplishment enveloped them. Yet, their dearth of battle-hardened experience proved a chink in their armor. While Badger had discerned the inception of their insurrection, he remained curiously indifferent. Unbeknownst to them, he had a calculated response in store, deploying a fiercely loyal underling awaiting the signal to initiate a relentless assault.

"Give the signal for the attack," Badger instructed his faithful subordinate, outlining his strategy with an unsettling directive. "Let a few of them slip through, including Tiffany, but ensure the rest meet their end."

The subordinate voiced his bewilderment, "Allow some to escape, boss?"

"Yes, I have a plan," Badger replied with an enigmatic assurance.

As the carnage ensued, screams pierced the air, mingling with the gruesome spectacle of dismemberment and bloodshed. A tide of overwhelming force swelled against their defenders. A handful managed to evade capture and fled to the exterior, among them Alexa and Tiffany. Yet, they were met with a formidable adversary, the ruthless Shane, flanked by his comrades awaiting them with deadly intent.

"Come at me and your dead, don't come at me and ill break a leg." Said Shane.

"We've got ten of us against fifteen of them. We can handle this," Tom remarked with conviction, bolstering the wavering spirits of the group.

Yet, the flaw in Tom's estimation lay in its failure to account for Shane's sheer potency. A singular force of destruction, Shane could single handedly incapacitate six of them or perhaps even more.

Undaunted, Tom and his compatriots charged forth with rallying cries, a show of bravado that paled in contrast to Shane's menacing approach. In his heart, Shane harbored no remorse, no vestige of love; his sentiments reserved solely for his son, or so he believed. He reveled in the bloodshed, savagely mauling his own comrades with a cruel piece of metal, laughter lacing his grim deeds.

"Come on, you ungrateful dogs! Die! Die!" he barked with a macabre fervor, orchestrating a massacre of his brethren.

A water ball surged toward Shane's head, but he nimbly sidestepped it, his retaliatory strike quick and precise. A punch laced with brute force slammed into his assailant's face, Shane's grip seizing and contorting the man's appendage. The victim crumbled to the ground, agony etched upon his features as Shane further dislocated his shoulder. Concurrently, a foe from behind launched an earth-bound assault, an effort that barely merited Shane's acknowledgment as he endured the strike without so much as a flinch.

With an air of casual dismissal, Shane brushed off the assault with disdain. "Pathetic attempt. You'll regret staining my shirt," he remarked with a sinister edge, advancing toward his assailant, the proximity stoking the blaze of his impending fire attack.

Tiffany's eyes tracked the unfolding chaos, her heart aching at the needless violence. Driven by the desire to avert further tragedy, she held steadfast to her resolve. But she needed at least two to escape, to find Rome and bring him back to salvage the situation.

Seizing the opportunity, Tiffany and her companions grappled to hold off the remaining guards, creating an avenue for escape – or so they believed. Amidst the turmoil, Alexia and Rollo managed to slip free from the maelstrom of battle.

Addressing Alexia urgently, Tiffany implored, "Alexa, you must find him, save yourselves."

Alexia protested, "I can't leave you here! I'm staying!"

Tiffany's voice rang with conviction, "After this, he'll come for you. He despises you remember Alexia but he seems to have a twisted fondness for me. Get out of here, I'll put an end to this bloodshed and prevent further loss. Go!"

So with that, Tiffany let out a resounding cry, her voice echoing, "We surrender! No more violence!" Her plea echoed in the ears of her companions, and as the others followed suit, the violence subsided.Shane, poised to unleash his fire attack upon a defenseless man, hesitated at Tiffany's impassioned call.

"Now that's the kind of sound I enjoy!" Shane bellowed, amusement and cruelty intertwining. "But I must complete what I set out to do."

He launched his attack, completely enveloping the man in flames. They all watched as he screamed in agonizing pain. Amidst the horrific spectacle, Shane's laughter echoed, a testament to his insatiable thirst for carnage. He then moved on, systematically breaking hands and legs, sparing Tiffany due to a special plan he had in mind for her.

The symphony of their torment was a perverse delight for this twisted individual. Reveling in the pain and screams, he found satisfaction in witnessing the suffering he inflicted upon others.

Approaching Tiffany, Shane's voice dripped with malice, "You thought we were oblivious to your scheme?" His brutal slap elicited a stream of blood from her nose. His assault continued, a relentless barrage that left her eyes and cheeks swollen. However, Badger intervened, his voice a thunderous command that cut through the tension, "Enough, Shane!" His stern words hung heavy in the air, a reminder of his authority.

Shane's retort, though venomous, lacked its initial intensity as he walked away, blaming Badger's soft spot for Tiffany as the reason for her betrayal.

"You're soft on her that's why she planned this." Said Shane.

Len emerged from behind Badger, his expression a mix of guilt and shame as he cast his gaze upon Tiffany. Among them, he had been one of the dissenting voices, opposing the reckless plan, a true turncoat in their midst.

"You, help her, please?" Badger's request for Tiffany's aid contrasted with his subsequent question about Rommie, the elusive figure they had heard whispers of. A knowing smile played on Badger's lips as he addressed his comrades, silently conveying his intention to explore this lead. Despite his criminal background, Badger displayed a shrewd discernment, unwilling to abandon their current circumstances solely for an unverified rumor. Methodically, he set in motion a careful plan, one that would safeguard their interests while investigating Rommie's potential sanctuary.

Amid the charged atmosphere, Tiffany's feeble voice managed to interject as she received medical attention. Her skepticism about locating Rommie prompted Badger's reassurance, a response that carried a comforting resonance.

"Don't worry, my dear," Badger's words were soothing, aiming to allay Tiffany's concerns. Her thoughts remained with Alexia and the others, who had embarked on their journey and were now beyond reach. Tiffany's sentiments ignited a fierce resolve within Badger, who pledged to ensure their safe passage before staking a claim on the rumored haven, even if it meant quelling any resistance.

A sudden realization hit Tiffany like a blow—Len was the traitor. Despite his earlier commitment to assist, he had switched allegiances. The escape attempt had resulted in a grim toll—seven dead, ten injured, and a prevailing sense of despair among the thirty who had ventured out. Surrender had become a prevailing sentiment, sparked by the sight of their companions falling like defenseless prey. Their aspirations had crumbled in the face of a bitter defeat.

Amid the escapees was Alexa, a resolute female companion, alongside Rollo and another companion, their determination casting shadows against the backdrop of uncertainty. The path leading to Rome's location lay shrouded in mystery, a journey fraught with the unknown, perhaps taking them a day or two, the daunting uncertainty of what lay ahead tugging at their thoughts. They sprinted through the dense forest, Alexia's gaze flitting to remnants of the old world, her memories serving as their compass in this unfamiliar territory. Their feet pounded the ground as they surged forward, the weight of their fatigue pulling at them, their only defense being the fledgling control over their powers, with Alexia leading the way through her honed training.

As they hurtled forward, every step seemed like a gamble, leaving their fate at the mercy of either luck or a higher power, for they had become exposed, bereft of Badger's protection. The sinister veil of uncertainty hung over them, the question of what perils awaited in this surreal realm haunting their thoughts like relentless specters.

After a relentless ten-minute sprint, they finally came to a breathless halt, the absence of pursuit a curious relief. Amidst the fleeting respite, a suggestion to camp emerged, embraced for the impending darkness that would soon blanket their surroundings.

The world around them bore a surreal transformation—lush bushes and unfamiliar trees dominated the landscape, their forms alien and surreal, as if plucked from dreams rather than nature. Among the eerie unfamiliarity, a remnant of the past beckoned—a partly obscured road, framed by the expanse of emerald green bushes and adorned with delicate blue blossoms, a spectral path that seemed to lead where Alexia's instincts dictated.

Camping became a necessity as the inky darkness settled in, obscuring their path and giving rise to unsettling noises that whispered through the air. "What is that unsettling sound?" A tremor of unease threaded through the air, echoed by uncertain glances shared among the group.

Alexia, summoning an air of conviction, offered a semblance of reassurance, "We should stay close together for now. The night's uncertainty is our only adversary." But even her words carried a trace of faltering confidence.

The companions huddled beside the flickering fire, their forms drawn close as if seeking refuge in each other's presence. In the hollow of night, they took turns finding solace in moments of rest, their slumber filled with dreams tinged with trepidation, wondering what dawn would reveal in this enigmatic world.
