Chapter 35 - Rain

"Cow, come here."

"Here, here, girl, this grass is delicious."

At the moment, I am testing the temperament of these animals; I will continue calling them cows because no matter how much I look, they are cows.

The colors, sizes, shapes, everything reminds me of a cow.

Currently, there should be bovines similar to cows in India and some parts of Asia.

But in the middle of the African continent, this shouldn't be possible.

Of course, it could be that, like the piluses, these cows just haven't been discovered, and I've found two species that haven't been found.

Well, there's another hypothesis.

I've been wrong from the beginning, and I haven't gone back in time; I'm in some kind of simulation of Earth in the early Pleistocene, but with things from other eras.

I sincerely hope it's the first; I just discovered a new species.

Because if I'm wrong, I have no idea what could happen.

Anyway, I can't do anything for now; all I can do for now is to try to continue evolving the tribe's knowledge and keep progressing.

"Chief, what are you doing with these fat gnus?"

"They're not gnus; they're cows. I want to find out if they are calm, like I did with the piluses. If I can tame them, they could be of great help to us, especially for carrying materials."

"But wouldn't the piluses do that?"

"Two is better than one."

"I see, but it doesn't seem to be working."

"Ah, I realized."

I tried to attract some with grass, but none showed interest. When I approached one, unlike the piluses that didn't care, they moved away, and if I forced it, they came at me to attack.

"Let's go; we'll still have time to deal with them. Now, let's head towards those hills."

After leaving the herd of cows, we continued towards the hills.

From the distance, I estimated that we would arrive when it starts to get dark.

During our walk, I noticed several cows grazing; I couldn't see other animals most of the time.

Sometimes I could see some small rodents; they came out of their burrows to look for food; they were somewhat cute.

Apart from them, I didn't find any new animals, only herds of cows, some gnus, and antelopes grazing.

I wonder if I'll find other animals, like the cows, or new ones like the piluses, living in those hills.

As we continued to advance, I was sure of one thing; I need a mount. Walking takes too long, and my feet hurt a lot. I hope my gnus grow up soon.

After a few hours of walking with some stops to rest, the sky started to darken.

"Chief, do you think it will rain today?"

"Uhmm, it's possible. Let's stop here for today; we'll set up camp. Be prepared in case it rains."

"We can put the tents in higher spots."

"Right, do that."

As Martins had said, it didn't take long for it to start raining. Rain is very good for getting water, but it also makes setting up camps more challenging.

The solution was to put the tents in higher spots and make paths on the ground to drain the water.

Well, rain wasn't something that happened much before; maybe the change of location changes that. From the southern forest, I can see that it rains more frequently here.

That forest may hold truly interesting things.

Since the camp was already set up, and with the rain, we couldn't light a fire. So, we could only start again tomorrow.

During that night, I took a while to fall asleep. I thought and made various theories about what could happen and what I could find. I did this until I fell asleep.

"Come on, wake up; today we have to reach those hills."

"Ah, morning; I'm exhausted. Can't we rest for today, chief? My feet hurt a lot."

"What pain? You're younger than me. Come on; when we get there, you can rest for a few days."

I still haven't chosen names for the others. At the moment, I think of them by characteristics. The one who complained about being tired, I call him "Novato" since he's the youngest. The others are varied, and some I just call "you," as I do with most of the tribe. Only a few I think of a name based on some characteristic, unlike Martins and the others, whom I chose a real name for.

"Do you think you're the only one tired? We're all tired. Now, besides you, is anyone else complaining?"

"No, Chief Martins."

"Then hold on and keep going; it won't take much longer."

"Alright."

That took me by surprise; I've never seen Martins act like this before. He seemed like a dad motivating his son.

"What was that?"

"What was what?"

"That! You acting like this."

"Oh, I get it. It's just that you weren't born yet, so you didn't know me before being the chief. At that time, I was like support for everyone."

"What happened for you to change then?"

"I became the chief, and I had to be careful even when sleeping."

"Ah, right. And now that you're no longer the chief because of me, you can be like support."

*He smiled.* "That's right. At first, I hated you, but now I thank you. Thank you."

"No problem; I hope to keep counting on you."

"You can be sure of that."

"Great. Everyone, we'll reach our destination today."
