Malik asked Safiya, "Do you only want to do this, even if you successfully fulfill your goal?" They were seated on stones facing a stream, the water making a quiet sound and frogs trotted nearby. Safiya looked ahead. Thanks to Malik and Oshim, she had quickly recovered and could even step out, although she still covered the path where the wound was.
"Yes," she replied firmly. She would have loved to join other warriors but knew society doesn't work that way. Besides, she would never work for the current king of Dakar. But this life she was living was something she would do.
"And you think no one would want to marry you?" Malik inquired.
She breathed, then slowly looked at him. "It will be better if they don't."
"Why?" he asked curiously, raising a brow at her. Safiya smiled and looked back at the water.
"If any suitor needs a wife who would murder them in their sleep, then they can come marry me."
