This statement had some merit, as characters in Western fantasy and science fiction often seemed rigid and cold, whereas characters in Eastern tales of immortals and martial artists felt more approachable and even enemies seemed somewhat adorable.
This also demonstrated the different social structures of the East and West. The West had advanced economies but many rigid aspects of social life, while the East was less developed but had a more lively and comfortable social atmosphere.
