Chapter 178 - Chapter 178: The Fall of Olgierd

After the impact between Letho's sword and Olgierd's scimitar, the latter was thrown back, and his hands were covered in blood.

It was the first time Lann had seen someone sent flying by a mere clash of swords.

Seeing that Letho had the advantage, Lann quickly activated his magic turret.

[Yrden Sign]!

A constantly jumping hourglass shadow appeared before Lann's sight.

The purple light enveloped Olgierd's body, not only preventing him from turning into black mist again, but also making his movements slow.

Letho waved his hand within the magic circle in curiosity. Could this Yrden Sign differentiate between friends and enemies?

Olgierd stood up, staggering like a drunk inside the magic circle. Lann stepped forward and disarmed Olgierd in one swift movement, then began to spin his body deftly...

[Whirl]!

A series of rapid and violent attacks were unleashed on Olgierd's body.

The swords inserted into Olgierd's body helped him block many of the attacks by accident, but even so, this sword dance nearly split all the muscles and organs in Olgierd's body, leaving him lying on the ground.

The hilt of the sword stuck in his back was exposed to Lann.

Lann grabbed her and with a strong pull pulled her off Olgierd's body.

Then, before he could get up, Lann pinned him to the ground again with another sword.

He repeated the process several times, immobilizing Olgierd's limbs and neck, securing him with another Yrden Sign, leaving him nearly unable to move.

"Lannister, what are you doing!"

Looking at the enemy struggling on the ground, Lann took a deep breath. He channeled his magic power, remembering Triss's lessons, and began to recite a spell...

[Artefact compression]!

Olgierd stopped talking abruptly, not because of pain, but because he could not make a sound.

His body began to twist and shrink, a jade hue emerging on her skin.

However, this transformation lasted only a few seconds before his body returned to normal.

Any other human would have died of internal bleeding, but the immortal Olgierd continued to curse Lann.

Lann began to think.

"Have you ever thought, Olgierd, that immortality can be a curse when you face a powerful enemy?"

Olgierd looked confused.

Lann shook his head. "I wasn't originally planning on dealing with you now, my main target is Rience. But since we're here... hehe."

Lann raised the rune sword in his hand, and the golden light flashed continuously, and he kept cutting and cutting.

Lann ordered the soldiers to wrap Olgierd's pieces into several packages, each taking a piece with them. Olgierd's immortality continued to function, as blood flowed from the packages.

Although it was troublesome, at least Lann could take Olgierd as a prisoner.

With the battle virtually over, Lann allowed the soldiers to rest and count the wounded.

He himself turned his attention to the spoils in his hand: an ancient scimitar with a brown wood handle and a scabbard with a strong nomadic style. This was the weapon Olgierd used in the previous battle, and the inventory showed its name: [Iris.]

Olgierd renamed the heirloom sword after his wife.

This sword was originally a family heirloom and was priceless. Olgierd, with his great talent in black magic, added numerous enchantments and alchemical enhancements to it.

Without a doubt, this scimitar was comparable in materials to the Aerondight Sword, and it also had a special magical effect: it accumulated red magical energy during battle, and upon reaching a certain level, it could release a powerful mid-distance magical slash.

The only drawback is that the magic attack of this sword in the red light state will consume the life of the wielder. But for Lann, who has the [Gourmet] skill and other healing potions, this is not a big problem.

In general, Lann is very satisfied with this trophy.

After examining it for a moment, Lann made a quick movement and stored the Iris scimitar into his inventory.

Letho approached and, pointing at the scattered remains of Olgierd, asked Lann: "What are you going to do? Divide his body into many parts and bury them somewhere, just like the devil in the fairy tale?"

Lann shook his head. "That would be too complicated. We're just doing it this way now to make it easier to transport. The best thing would be to use the Artefact Compression spell, but as you can see, I still need to practice it more."

Letho said: "If your sorceress was here, everything would be easier. I remember her name is Triss, right?"

Lann nodded and explained: "Triss is more needed on Chappelle's mission right now."

...

From a balcony in the Temple of Eternal Fire, two red lights flickered in a shadow.

They were Kiyan's eyes. "Miss Triss, I'm in position."

There was nothing in front of him, but after saying those words, the air on the roof distorted slightly and Triss's voice could be heard. "How did you find me?"

Kiyan responded naturally: "I knew you were waiting on the roof, and based on the vibration of my medallion, I was able to determine your relative position. It's simple."

The distortion and shaking of the air on the roof became more intense. Triss was silent for two seconds and asked: "Did you bring back the brother of Olgierd?"

Kiyan nodded and said: "Yes, he has now possessed a temple guard. We need to let him fight inside for a while to amuse himself, and then we'll have him leave written proof of his return to the world of the living and his enjoyment. Thus, Lann's task will be complete."

"The future of Novigrad will depend on what happens now."

Triss knew about Lann's plan. Her presence here was part of the mission. She closed her eyes and focused in the direction Kiyan had pointed, but found no trace of the spirit.

"You say the spirit is possessing a temple guard? Where is he?"

Kiyan pointed at a particularly excited guard. "There, the one radiating that nasty energy. Can't you feel it?"

Triss opened her eyes and shook her head. At that moment, the sorceress felt a certain academic curiosity about Kiyan.

Fortunately, her magical illusion made her invisible, otherwise Kiyan, being so sensitive, would have noticed her expression.

...

On the other hand, Chappelle and Caleb Menge were surrounded by their respective subordinates, in a direct confrontation.

"Caleb Menge, you're just the captain of the temple guards. Who gave you the courage to challenge Chappelle? And you followers of the Eternal Fire, do you know what you're doing?"

Chappelle is the Chancellor of Security for the Church of the Eternal Fire in Novigrad, one of the most powerful men in Novigrad and wields significant influence in politics.

Although Caleb Menge, as commander of the temple guards, had many followers, he still had to be careful when confronting Chappelle.

After all, the Eternal Fire was a religion, not a common political force. It wasn't enough to kill Chappelle to take his place. In addition to money and power, faith was needed.

At least, a faith that was credible.

"I received information that gangs are planning to cause riots in the city." Chappelle said coldly, maintaining the composure he had always had as the Chancellor of Security.

"And I also received information that you, Caleb Menge, are in contact with them. Originally, I didn't believe it and planned to talk to you after dealing with the criminals. But now it seems that the information was correct."

Chappelle's guards drew their weapons, ready to act at their leader's command and defend the Eternal Fire.

Caleb Menge looked around. In his original plan, Novigrad should have been in chaos and Chappelle's troops should have been scattered. Not like now, all prepared as if waiting for his arrival.

If a conflict broke out, the outcome would be uncertain. And if the battle dragged on, his soldiers could quickly lose morale under Chappelle's authority.

Those criminal scum could not be trusted.

Caleb Menge cursed the gang members in his mind, planning to get revenge on them later.

However, he was not panicked. Although the plan had some deviations, he still had not played the trump card in his hand, and now was the right time.

"Now you support Chappelle, thinking he is the Chancellor of Security and the warrior who once led you to spread the gospel of Eternal Fire." Caleb Menge said slowly, confident of victory. "I once told myself that I must follow him. He is the most devoted fire-bearer I have ever seen."

"If you know that Mr. Chappelle represents that, why don't you step aside? We must stop the criminals before their chaos reaches the citizens!"

Hearing Chappelle's follower scolding him, Caleb Menge suddenly raised his voice, scaring everyone.

"It is true, criminals threaten believers, but there is an even greater danger in the temple, right under our noses, praying to the Eternal Fire with us every day!"

Caleb Menge raised his sword, pointing it at Chappelle. "You're not Chappelle, you're a dirty, cunning, evil doppler!"

Caleb Menge's words caused an uproar among Chappelle's followers.

Nobody believed such a ridiculous accusation.
