The name "the God of Slaughter" sent ripples of fear throughout the Ministry of Defense, a title that made every adventurer and noble shiver. Helio, my brother, embodied ruthless strength, a stark contrast to my own persona as the saint of Aureliu.
A year had passed since Helio left to become an adventurer, and during that time, he had carved out a fearsome reputation. Known for his merciless and cruel nature, he had earned the moniker "The God of Slaughter" β Helio Aureliu. The name, despite its ominous undertones, had an oddly captivating ring to it. Nevertheless, he was returning now, compelled to attend the royal academy and win favor with my uncle Michael and Elizabeth.
My brother had undoubtedly grown stronger during his time as an adventurer, yet he remained vulnerable to certain types of magic and poisons. As I awaited his arrival, my heart raced with anticipation. I longed for the sight of my brother, no matter how temporary his presence might be.
The moment Helio stepped off the carriage, I couldn't contain my excitement. I ran towards him, embracing him with all my might. He was back, and even if it wasn't permanent, his presence meant the world to me.
"Calli," he said softly, hugging me gently. "You've grown taller," he remarked with a slight exaggeration.
"You're bigger and a bit stronger... I suppose," I replied, attempting to hide my awe at the overwhelming power he exuded. Athena's presence was formidable, and I could sense the immense strength he now possessed.
Helio must have noticed my reaction as he made an effort to restrain his mana, for which I was grateful. His gaze locked onto mine, and it felt like the brother I knew had returned, despite the ominous title of the God of Slaughter.
"Cousin Helion, you're back," the familiar feminine voice that had haunted my nightmares and waking moments chimed in from behind me. I turned around, maintaining a pleasant smile.
However, Helion chose not to engage with Elizabeth. The gentle smile he had worn moments ago vanished, replaced by an inscrutable expression.
"Lady Elizabeth, Duchess. I greet you," he said, with the title of duchess sounding almost forced, which was undoubtedly the case.
"Oh, Aunt, the rumors about you being the Belladonna of the capital must be true. You look quite stunning," my Aunt Sarah was with Elizabeth today. I rarely saw her, as she was often busy attending to affairs and managing mine and Helly's inheritance.
The idea that she was now the lady of the house had become a permanent fixture in her mind. She largely ignored me, making her way to the carriage without acknowledging my presence. Classic Sarah.
"My brother must be quite exhausted. We'll head inside now," I offered Elizabeth a small smile and led Helly into the mansion, eager to catch up and discuss important matters.
Sarah's POV
The sight of those obnoxious gold eyes and that disgusting silver hair was enough to ruin my mood. The girl was somewhat more bearable; she never caused trouble, and we could get rid of her whenever we wanted. But that brother of hers was a thorn in my side. I hadn't realized I was clenching my hands until I heard Elizabeth's chuckles.
"Now, now, Miss Belladonna. You wouldn't want to hurt yourself," she said, taking hold of my hands. My daughter was so precious; that's why Michael and I did all this, for her happiness and nothing more.
"No one really calls me that, right," I said, huffing.
"You are quite the looker, Mother."
"That I am."
Elizabeth was already preparing for her coming of age. After that, we'll enroll her in the academy so she can be a proper heir for Aureliu. I've already crossed the line, so what's a little more blood on my hands? It's for Lizzy.
"I want to ensure you are the star of tomorrow's soiree. Let that Callista girl fade into the background. I'll make you shine, darling," I caressed her cheek as she smiled at me.
