Chapter 50 - Coalgrave

"Hey, bro, it's me, Javon. Just wanted to check up on you. I heard the yearly tournament is coming up… just wanted to uhhhhh… wish you good luck. Of course, if you're attending. See ya."

"Play next voice mail."

"I GOT WORD FROM THE SCHOOL THAT YOU HAVE ONCE AGAIN-"

"Play next voicemail."

"The following message is crafted using our automated voice messaging system… Hello. Your attendance says that you were absent from two classes today. If this is a mistake, please contact your teachers in order to have these marks removed."

"Play next voicemail."

"It's me, Javon again. Mom and Dad are worried as you haven't replied to any of their-"

"Play next voicemail."

"You have no more voicemails…"

Calix lay in his bed, enveloped in the quiet shadows of his room. His forearm rested wearily over his eyes, attempting to shield them from the dim but flickering glow that cast a subdued warmth across the space. The room, although cozy and inviting, felt more like a refuge than a sanctuary, and Calix, wrapped in the soft embrace of his blankets, shivered despite the comforting ambiance.

A soft hum emanated from the corner, where a small desk lamp flickered intermittently, casting a gentle light that danced along the walls. The warmth it emitted failed to dispel the subtle chill that lingered in the air, causing Calix to burrow deeper into the cocoon of his blankets. The room held a certain intimacy, with familiar shadows playing on the walls and a soft glow that highlighted the edges of well-loved possessions.

"O' Ignatia Alchema, grant me the warmth of your womb."

As those delicate words slipped from Calix's lips, a subtle transformation unfolded. The room, once touched by a delicate chill, seemed to respond to the invocation. The flickering shadows bowed before a surge of steampunk enchantment.

A soft hum, akin to the purring of a contented machine, resonated from the heart of Calix's room. The small desk lamp, once a mere flicker, radiated with newfound vigor. Its glow, now steadier and more vibrant, extended tendrils of warmth that reached every corner. The air, previously tinged with a lingering chill, surrendered to the embrace of technological marvel.

Calix, wrapped in the cocoon of his blankets, felt a subtle shift beneath his layers. His shivering form stilled as if touched by an invisible hand, and the comforting ambiance that enveloped him intensified. Unseen gears within his steampunk-infused technology whirred to life, sending waves of heat outward from the very core of his being.

"You have a new voicemail," A familiar robotic voice bellowed from the System Connector attached to his wrist.

"Turn off all notifications until I've awoken. Access to Central Circadian Clock is permitted."

"Permission Received. Good night, Calix."

"G'night… *sigh*..."

…

As the first rays of dawn tiptoed into Calix's room, a soft glow began to infiltrate the peaceful shadows that cradled the sleeping figure. The air, still imbued with the warmth of the enchanted room, carried a gentle reassurance as Calix stirred from his slumber. His eyes fluttered open, adjusting to the soft morning light that painted a serene portrait across his cozy space.

Calix, feeling rejuvenated after a night's rest, sat up on the edge of his bed. The remnants of sleep clung to him like a comforting embrace, and for a moment, he savored the tranquility that morning brought. His surroundings, adorned with familiar possessions basking in the warm glow, offered a silent invitation to embrace the new day.

With deliberate movements, Calix swung his legs over the side of the bed, his bare feet meeting the cool floor beneath. The transition from the cocoon of blankets to the welcoming embrace of the room carried a sense of continuity as if the enchantment lingered in the very air. Calix stretched, the subtle creak of joints punctuating the quiet ambiance.

As he rose to his feet, a soft hum resonated in the room. The intricate machinery of his steampunk-infused system connector, dormant during the night's repose, stirred to life. The metallic components, adorned with intricate gears and symbols, emitted a faint glow, casting a subtle radiance around Calix's forearm. The enchanting fusion of magic and technology signaled the awakening of his unique capabilities.

The system connector, now active, responded to Calix's movements with a subtle display of its mechanical intricacies. Whirring softly, the device seemed to synchronize with the rhythm of his heartbeat. As Calix stood in the gentle morning light, the harmonious dance between man and machine resumed, marking the beginning of a new day filled with possibilities and discoveries.

"Your payment for the System Companion hasn't gone through. Please check if you have a sufficient amount of money in your account and if the problem please consists, contact the following number… 114-"

"Skip."

"System Companion will be inactive until the payment goes through."

"*sigh*..."

No more than an hour later, Calix found himself seated at a solitary corner in the bustling cafeteria, surrounded by the lively hum of fellow students engaged in morning chatter. His tray, adorned with a modest breakfast, sat before him, the aroma of warm food wafting through the air. Despite the animated atmosphere, Calix sat in quiet contemplation, his gaze fixed on a distant point, lost in the recesses of his thoughts.

The clatter of utensils and the rhythmic conversations provided a backdrop to Calix's solitude. His eyes, thoughtful and introspective, seemed to wander beyond the immediate surroundings, tracing invisible paths in the air. The sunlight filtering through the large windows cast a gentle glow on his features, illuminating the subtle furrow of his brow.

Calix's breakfast, a simple assortment of nourishment, awaited his attention, but his focus remained elsewhere. The room echoed with the cadence of laughter and camaraderie, yet Calix embraced the tranquility of his personal reverie. A steaming cup of tea emitted tendrils of warmth, creating a comforting aura around him as he occasionally lifted it to his lips.

All in all, he was pretty lonely.

All of a sudden, he felt a push against the back of his head. His face instantly crumpled into anger, but upon seeing the two children behind him, his expression softened. His instinctive reaction quelled and he playfully brushed it off.

"I just did my hair, Marlene…"

Marlene snickered as she pulled up a chair beside Calix while Silas sat across from him, both of them placing their trays of food down on the table. It was an assortment of dishes that reflected Calix's own plate.

"Thankfully Marlene actually got up in time, so we can all eat together," Silas muttered.

"Do you always eat alone?" Marlene asked, Silas twitching his eyes between his own spoon-feeding soup into his mouth and Calix who stared down into his tea. His eyes almost seemed to glaze over as he quickly avoided the question.

"So, what's the plan today?"
