Chapter 12 - Backstage

Silas and Emily cloaked in the shadows, crept with utmost silence through the narrow backstage corridor of the renowned theatre. The dim, flickering gaslight lanterns barely illuminated their path, casting long and eerie shadows across the peeling, time-worn wallpaper. The air was thick with the lingering scent of old wood and paint. The corridor, filled with the whisper of secrets from countless performances, led the way to the coveted backstage area.

Silas and Emily concealed themselves behind a heavy velvet curtain, their breath barely a whisper in the stagnant air. Peering out into the backstage, they watched as a flurry of actors and stagehands rushed about, preparing for the upcoming performance. The room was a chaotic blend of antique mirrors, dressing tables, and racks of extravagant costumes.

Emily's holographic interface flickered with data, displaying crucial information about the theatre's layout and the location of its target. Silas remained ever vigilant, his steely gaze scanning the bustling backstage.

As Silas and Emily observed from their hidden vantage point, they couldn't help but notice the dancers from beyond the curtain, whose attire was a masterful blend of androgyny and alluring elegance. Each performer exuded an aura of enchantment and mystique that transcended traditional gender norms.

The dancers' costumes were carefully designed to blur the lines of gender and emphasize their graceful, alluring movements. They wore outfits that featured elements of both masculinity and femininity, making it challenging to discern the gender of any particular dancer. This deliberate ambiguity added a layer of allure to their performances.

The androgynous attire featured gossamer fabrics that draped and clung in all the right places, revealing just enough skin to tantalize the imagination. Sequined leotards were paired with flowing chiffon skirts, and tailored pantsuits were combined with sheer, diaphanous blouses. Each outfit was adorned with lace, intricate embroidery, and vibrant silk sashes.

The makeup was equally as captivating, with eyes accentuated by dramatic kohl and lips painted in rich, alluring hues. The dancers' androgynous beauty transcended conventional boundaries, adding a layer of complexity to the already enchanting world of the theater.

Both boy and woman peered onto the stage and watched as the dancers began their mesmerizing performance. The hauntingly beautiful melody filled the theater, an exquisite blend of sorrow and hope that tugged at the heartstrings of those in attendance.

The dancers moved with such grace and precision that their every step seemed to tell a story. The performance was an intricate ballet of emotions, a delicate fusion of despair and optimism. Their movements embodied the struggle, the journey from darkness into the light, and the dance exuded an irresistible aura of melancholic beauty.

As the dancers twirled and leaped, their fluid movements told a tale of resilience and determination, emotions that transcended words. Silas and Emily were captivated by the dancers' expressions, which reflected a profound longing and a yearning for something better. The combination of exquisite choreography and poignant music created a powerful narrative that left a lingering impact on the audience.

Amidst the dance's ebb and flow, the dancers' exquisite artistry ignited a spark of hope, reminding everyone that even in the depths of despair, there could be a glimmer of light. The sorrowful beauty of their performance hung in the air, a testament to the ability of art to convey profound, complex emotions without uttering a single word.

"Don't get too distracted. Keep your eye out for the jewel," Emily whispered, still keeping her steam maxed out in order to grasp the location of the intended target.

"I heard Glover the first time…" Silas responded.

What was so unique about this gig was that this jewel wasn't just placed in some random glass box for somebody to come and cut a hole into. But instead, the jewel was on one of the attendants in the crowd. Their identity was unknown, their position was unknown, and their backing was unknown, meaning this mission was as dangerous as it could possibly be.

Of course, this information wasn't given in the gig. Glover deduced that this entire mission was set up from the start over a leaked piece of information, but of course, professionals should have been able to get this job done… right?

"Hey, do we have any info on what it looks like?" Silas whispered.

"It's big. That's pretty much it."

"I think I found it. Row A, Seat 3."

"Hmmmm…" Emily's tech zoomed in on that exact spot and with the help of an extra release of steam invisible to the naked eye, she was able to make out the location of the jewel. She couldn't help but glance over at Silas who was somehow able to see this, before shaking off the unnecessary thoughts and confirming that, "Yep, that's our target. But… actually, Glover, I'm just gonna send you the info. Get back to me as soon as possible with your thoughts."

The two retreated back out from the curtains and right into the empty hallway now wreaked with a horrible stench. But at the same time, Silas was hit with a wave of familiarity that caused him to shoot his head back and feel a rush of endorphins envelop his mind.

"What's happening?" Emily muttered, a drop of sweat rushing down her cheek as she scanned through her infiltrated security system. "This smell… it's Necros."

"Ugh… ugh… fuck… ugh…" Silas groaned, limp on the ground as his eyes rolled back into his head from the pleasure and drool slipped out from the side of his lips. "Can't… move…"

"Glover, can I get a confirmation that you received my info." No response. "Glover… Glover!"

'Hold on, the police aren't here because of the automatic call. They're here because they were tipped off about something. I'm tryna bribe them with more money, but they're not crackin' in the slightest.'

"Dammit, we have to leave. I marked the man, so we should be fine."

'Why, what's wrong?'

"Necros has flooded the building and Silas doesn't have the steam to resist its effects. I'm gonna take us out now," Emily informed before feeling her connection with Glover waver.

BOOOOOOOOOM
